Day 53-60: 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo

Having only driven it no more than 1/2 mile in almost 2 months, we got it driving and more importantly stopping…FINALLY! Later that night however, the CEL came on after a huge loss of power while cruising.

After days of this that and the other, we found a wire hanging loose. We’d already diagnosed the Knock Sensor as what was causing the CEL and issues and sure enough the KS had no connector wire attached. After tracing it to the ECU and checking the pinout, we confirmed we were correct. We added a new connector and reattached the wire back to the KS.

Along with some interior repairs, cleaning, and reinstallation of trim pieces; we adjusted the suspension, addressed some more boost leaks in vacuum lines, secured some loose lines on the undercarriage, and continued troubleshooting an ongoing idle surge.

Lastly, the spoiler had risers added for AutoX purposes, but we removed them to give it a more subtle look 🤌

Days 39-46: 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo

Ordering parts, finding and resolving issues, and installation.

Front Lower Strut Assembly had a whack bolt with 11 washers to make it fit…We ordered a new one from Toyota.

We decided that it would be better safe than sorry with the suspension, so we ordered brand new replacements of the existing TEIN coilovers.

New wiper arms and a shifter surround was ordered as well. custom builds the shifter surround for lever size, carbon pattern, and accessory colors. We also ordered a throttle cable, but ended up not needing it—I’ll get to that later 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

Day 33: 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo

Installed brand new Stainless Brake Lines, rebuilt one caliper, ordered a remanned caliper, and then tested, cleaned up the other 2, and painted them black. We added EBC Yellow Pads and brand new Rotors.

At this point we know we have a damaged Front Damper that will need to be rebuilt or replaced. On a time crunch and not expecting to splurge for a full set of suspension, we started searching for available options.

Week 3: 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo

We diagnosed most of the issues and came up with a solid build plan moving forward. Budget set, time frame in place, and a parts list to be ordered/fixed was created.

Finding parts for this would turn out to be time consuming and somewhat difficult, but the MR2 community is a pretty good community to be in. Companies like MR2Heaven, Prime MR2, and came to the rescue multiple times with quality parts and good shipping times.

Websites like MR2OC.com and multiple Facebook Groups were filled with valuable information and plenty of people to answer questions, give advice, and help with allocation of hard-to-find parts. Can’t say enough good things.

Day 2: 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo

It needed a good cleaning to get an understanding of it’s true condition. We made a list of items to check, items to fix, items to replace, and items we wanted to add to the build.

At this point the brakes don’t work at all, front suspension looks to have physical issues, rear wheels are rubbing the fenders, engine bay is a mess, motor would crank but barely stays running, the interior has a ton of broken clips, broken tabs on trim pieces, shift boot damaged, etc…but it looks good cleaned up 🤩

Day 1: 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo

I drove a couple hours to buy an Acura, but the sale fell through. Fortunately for me I had passed this Gem on the way into town that morning. Later that day and a second 3+ hour trip to boot, this was on a trailer back to the shop.

We knew the brakes and suspension both had issues along with multiple other items that needed to be addressed —we just didn’t know exactly how many or even WHAT all of the issues were.

Hey Everyone!

Firstly, thank you for visiting our page! My name is Jeremiah. I run JiJi’s JDM.

During the day I run a Used Car Dealership. It’s just your typical USDM selection of cars, trucks, and SUVs… but on the side, I started buying, repairing, and rehoming some of the cars that we all absolutely loved while growing up in the early 2000’s Tuner scene.

My goal is simple: Save as many JDM pieces as possible. Too many of these early 90’s gems are being lost to time and negligence, so I’m making it my mission to do my part in saving them.

I fix what I can, replace what I must, and I always leave the cars better than I find them. I won’t sell a vehicle that has known issues without full disclosure because these cars need owners that will take care of them and the first step in doing that is knowing what to take care of.

I learn more and more every day and I meet awesome people at every turn. Welcome to JiJi’s JDM and thanks for supporting the cause with your likes, shares, and word of mouth. I look forward to sharing information and getting to know you guys!

-Jeremiah
