Here is an update of that workbench I made. I guess I made the right measurements as it just fits right working upright or sitting on a bar stool. Now I have a nice place to engage in my various crafts and a central place to locate tools and equipment. A metal rolling tool box is next on the "to buy" list and will be on the other side of the garage.

A good thing to have which i consider an essential but not necessarily mandatory is a good sturdy workbench. I recently built mine and this is what is needed.

52” wide, 24” deep, 41”high
pictures shown are just before completion and lack bracing and aprons.

6 pcs 2x4x8 @ $5
box of #8 x 3” deck screws @ $8
kreg 320 kit @ $35
2 boxes of kreg 2 1/2 coarse thread screws @ $7.50

can be done with hand saw and old school scrwdriver but a circular saw and impact driver will make life easier.

now i have a bench to mount shop equipment like grinder, vise and drill press.

also to a place for the beer and somsuman.

Here is another tool you may need if you are seriously getting into fixing your own scooter. Flywheel puller.
M24 X 1.0 Right hand thread is what you need.
This tool includes a flip side of M27 X 1.0 Left hand thread.
You will need this to remove the flywheel.
You will need to remove the flywheel if you are going to replace the stator. Or inspect it for damage. I've seen physical damage to stator cause by incorrect bolt length used to secure the blower and the bolt protruding inside damaged the windings of the stator rendering it useless.

EDIT: I am referring here to a typical Chinese made 49cc "GY6" also known as QMBsomething.
Most all of my posting will be about this motor as this is the most common that I work on.
Less than $10 on Amazon.

If your scooter suddenly quits running and made a weird alarming noise just seconds before it died the first thing to check is the spark plug and if it looks like this then most likely (this really is like a worst case scenario) the insides will look like this too.

The valve head of the exhaust valve fell off and did the internal damage and could not be located as of the time of disassembly. Most probably it is now residing with the oil in the crankcase.

Most times when the valve head falls off you can get away with just replacing the head and piston.

Most times it is the exhaust valve but I've seen one or two intake valve head break off too.

If you are going into fixing your own scooter you will need an impact wrench. I prefer the air type (over the battery powered ones) that need a compressor because with the compressor I can do other things like air up tires and blow dirt out from work area.

The battery powered ones are really nice and convenient to have so if you got money to have that and a an air compressor that would be best.

I also prefer the 1/2 inch drive over the 3/8 because while the 3/8 might be sufficient for scooter work you might encounter a badly frozen wheel nut. And also I might be working on cars and other stuff.

This is from Amazon and is one of the cheaper brand at $45 + tax.
The air compressor of 5 gallon capacity is about $150.

Edit: I forgot to mention the places you will need this. Number 1 is the rear wheel nuts and then the clutch and variator.
Although they can be done with out an impact wrench, you will need some holding device to keep the wheel, clutch or variator from revolving.

The scooter was badly sputtering and was caused by a fouled spark plug. The spark plug was replaced and the scooter ran perfect for about a quarter mile then was sputtering again. Upon inspection of the new spark plug a piece of carbon was lodge on the gap.

This is a common occurrence and this is quite expensive to repair. The head of the exhaust valve breaks off and the piston chews it damaging itself in the process. My best guess is that the valves are set too tight but just tight enough that the motor still works. It then results in the valve constantly being overheated and leads to failure. So what should you do? When you buy your scooter it would be worth the extra effort to check the valves for proper clearance.

You don't want Your spark plug to get to this stage.
In this condition the scooter is sputtering and barely able to run.
I'm guessing 2500 miles did this. Might have been shorter, who knows?
I'm still researching what causes this as I have seen 10,000 miles and plug still good.
When your scooter feels weak, check the spark plug or just change it for good measure.

Here is my first tip after I recently heard of an incident.
During the days leading to Hurricane Ian coming to town, a lot of gas stations ran out of gas.

If you really need gas and cant find it you can go buy canned gasoline at Lowe's or Home Depot. It will contain some 2 stroke lubricant in it but it is better than no gas. Also more expensive.
But you can get to where you want to be.

DONT PUT DIESEL IN YOUR SCOOTER'S GAS TANK!!!!!!!!!!!!
