Another Ecotec 2.4L timing set with broken guides, a fully extended tensioner and guide bolt damaged by missing guide. This one made it to 175k on the original set and rattled upon startup for a good ten seconds before quieting down. Installed full timing set w/ both chains, guides water pump, thermostat, vc gasket set, oil, filter and more.

Happiness is hearing the recycled engine you installed a timing set and nigh every gasket known before putting it into a 23 year old car start up on the first crank. Bonus points for no leaks or codes and piping hot heat. Some days are better than others.

The $300 coolant hose, just in case you wanted to know what one looked like.

Customer said another shop estimated replacing a coolant hose on their 2019 F150 3.5L at over $800 dollars. They came in for a second opinion. I was shocked at such an estimate, until I found no aftermarket assemblies available. That is the retail price, $305. Toss in 1.5 hrs labor and coolant that retails for $20/gallon and the costs add up. . Of course they added a coolant flush service and new radiator cap. I saw no evidence of corrosion in the coolant system and a perfectly good cap. My estimate came in around $500. Still, stupidly expensive, but much less then they were quoted.

This month's photo essay contest at Fubar Garage LLC was titled, "Tell me you're working on a former Great Lakes area vehicle without telling me you're working on a former Great Lakes area vehicle." Lead mechanic Mike Murray submitted the winning entry, including a 1/4" drive, 10mm socket for scale. For his efforts, Mike received a gift certificate to the long defunct Burger Chef restaurant as the grand prize.
