Charlie Korschgen 4th of July Kiddie Parade

Charlie Korschgen 4th of July Kiddie Parade The parade got its beginnings back in 1913 when a young AT&SF car department clerk, Charles C.

Korschgen, saw his neighborhood kids had nothing to do on the 4th of July, so he purchased a dozen small flags strapped his snare drum around his neck and led them many times around block in the west end of Fort Madison. Having started a tradition, Charlie continued this routine for many years, gradually increasing the parade route and buying the participants candy with his own money. Finally by t

he time the 1930’s rolled around the participation had grown so that Charlie got help from fellow workers at the AT&SF and neighbors to assist with the treats and the parade. By this time the “east enders” had noticed the importance of the parade and invited Charlie to lead his band of patriots into the Fort Madison downtown district. One loyal youngster who took part in the first parade, Don Valentine, stayed with the parade until Charlie passed away in January 1966 after leading 53 parades. Don Valentine helped the Fort Madison Jaycees keep the tradition alive. By the 1940’s, Charlie was having 500 to 1,000 kids take part in the parade and by 1946, when the Loyal Order of the Moose started providing treats the “grand old-man” as Charlie was called just had to organize the parade. With age catching up with Charlie the Fort Madison Junior Chamber of Commerce volunteered to take over the organization of the parade and continued to do so until the local Jaycee Chapter disbanded in 1999 and since that time a small dedicated group of volunteers have kept the parade going and in 2008 incorporated as a non-profit corporation. Everyone young and old is invited to take part in the parade to celebrate our nation’s birthday, however, the committee reserves to right to refuse entries not in the spirit of the holiday or would create a safety hazard to those participating in the parade

For over 20 years Vinnie;s Long Branch was a major contributor to Charlie Korschgen's 4th of July Kiddie Parade - in some years as high as $200.
WHY? As Louie Vincent said - as a kid him and his sister looked at Charlie Korschgen as family because during the months before Christmas they spent many hours in Charlie's workshop making wooden toys for needy children at Christmas time that were distributed through Alfred Kenel and the Fort Madison Jaycees "Toys for Tots" program.
Louie said Charlie at times would let him and his sister paint the toys, although Louie admitted Charlie praised them but after they left Charlie did a better paint job.
Also Charlie's wife Nola always treated them with sandwiches and cookies for helping Charlie. Charlie Korschgen and Nola never had kids of their own but loved children, especially the neighborhood children, as why he started the parade 114 years ago.
How many lives did he touch!
Remembering history at the North Lee County Historical Society Museums on 10th street in the ATF/CBQ Depot Complex, main office open 10-4pm daily and noon-4pm Sunday.

To join in on the 114th annual Charlie Korschgen 4th of July Kiddie Parade all you need is a smile and an American Flag. Back when cousins Carol & Linda Griswold joined the parade in 1949 the flag only had 48 stars as they paraded down Avenue G.
YES - all are invited to celebrate the 4th of July and our nations 250th birthday by either entering the parade or cheering on the participants taking the opportunity to walk or ride down the middle of the street.
Parade starts at 15th and Avenue G today but back in 1949 Carol & Linda had to walk from 26th and Avenue I as the parade started at Charlie Korschgen's home.

Mike McCabe still a follower on the NLCHS face book page now living in I believe Nebraska should remember when he and his sisters Carolyn and Cathy took part in the 1949 Charlie Korschgen 4th of July Kiddie Parade.
Their mother Betty Davis McCabe was a relative of Mr. Korschgen and took part in many parades.
Back then we saw bicycles and strollers that only in museums today.
Back in 1949 the parade went about 25 blocks from Charlies house on 2610 Avenue I to 6th & Avenue G.
Today only 9 blocks and maybe some after registering will join in at 10th street for the parade.
Guess kids and adults were tougher back in the days before air-conditioning - sure the Fourth of July was as hot as today.
See you at the parade celebrating our nations 250th anniversary with Charlie!

Going back to the 62nd annual Charlie Korschgen 4th of July Kiddie Parade the Jaycee committee decided on a King and Queen that rode in the parade
Remember this 1975 parade was one year before the Bicentennial Celebration but this years 114th annual parade is honoring the 250 anniversary of the USA and have added another entry category - so now 11 trophy categories.
All young and old are invited to join the parade and as usual will have entries that wish to be non-competitive but strut their organization, business, etc.
As in every year the committee retains the right to refuse entries that not in the spirit of the holiday celebration.
Believe both King & Queen still among the living!

No it was not a two or three person parade back in 1991 with Rusty on his bicycle and now today's cochairman of the 2026 - 114th annual Charlie Korschgen 4th of July Kiddie Parade. He is working hard with the committee and others to make this years parade an great one on our nations 250th birthday.
(Yes Rusty was once this small)
Volunteers needed not only to participate but to assure all participants have an organized and safe parade.
As chairman I hate to pull parents from crowd and ask them to carry category signs and walk alongside the parade assure safty and in some cases in past to catch run-away pets in the pet category.
The parade participants safety while enjoying themselves is always a priority.
The morning of the parade you can offer your assistance or earlier can call Andy Andrews, chairman at 319-371-5379.

You or your children or grandchildren's imagination can come up with an entry into the 114th annual Charlie Korschgen 4th of July Kiddie Parade.
In the past had 10 categories but for this 250th anniversary year of the USA we are adding a 11th category just for a 250th entry.
Chairman loves all entries and one pictured below from 2007 - yes the participants have got older but memories of celebrating the holiday last forever!
See you on July 4, 2026 in this years historic parade - if not in the parade line the street as a spectator to thank the creators of the decorated entries.
You got an OLD photo of parade - add it to our archives!
