The racing was intense to say the least, as a mechanic was needed with the 5 minute qualifiers. Pops and I were getting used to pitting after not racing together since 2019!
Ending Friday's qualifying I was 4th overall but still looking to get a 20 lap run.
After qualifying I was 11th overall and started 5th in the 30 minute Semi-Final. In the warmup the engine was a bit off so we made some adjustments before the first fuel stop and then I drove as best I could from last to 4th with one fuel stop left to complete the race. After my last fuel stop I knew we wouldn't make it to the end of the race and Pops told me to stay out and not pit for a splash and go in order to stay in front of Max Smalls. While needing a 5th place to bump up and currently running in 4th place I let Tossolini by to stay in 5th ahead of Smalls just before the last lap. On the last lap Smalls ran out of fuel in the carousel, then I ran out half way down the back straight! Fortunately, I had crossed the line in 5th, in the bump up position but we both ran out of fuel. Max Smalls and I both advanced into the A final! An epic strategy call from Pops to stay out and not pit from 5th, the bump-up position!
In the 60 minute A Final, I started 11th and worked my way up to 5th before my second fuel stop. Before the 3rd fuel stop, I was avoiding a stalled car in the carousel when the turn marshal stepped on the track to retrieve it. I maneuvered not to hit the turn marshal and got off line. A split second later I was in the wall with my rear suspension broken. Pops and I hustled back to the pits, replaced the lower a-arm, set the car back up and went back out to maximize our fun and finish 8th overall. Thankfully his pit stops improved over the course of the final!
Congrats to all the participants! We are already looking forward to the next ROAR On Road Fuel Nationals!
