Humans are expected to travel back to the Moon’s vicinity in the near future, though an actual landing will come later. The next major step is Artemis II, a crewed mission planned as the first human journey beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972.

Artemis II is scheduled for February 9, 2026, and will send four astronauts—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen—on a roughly ten-day mission around the Moon and back to Earth. The crew will fly aboard the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, launched on the Space Launch System Block 1 rocket, both developed by NASA.

The mission will follow a free-return trajectory, a carefully calculated path that uses the Moon’s gravity to guide the spacecraft back to Earth without requiring major propulsion after lunar flyby. Artemis II is designed as a test flight, focusing on life-support systems, navigation, deep-space communications, and Orion’s heat shield during high-speed reentry.

While Artemis II does not include a landing, it is a critical prerequisite for Artemis III, which is intended to return astronauts to the lunar surface. Together, these missions are part of a broader plan to establish a sustained human presence on and around the Moon, laying the groundwork for future deep-space exploration.
