When a Transmission Problem Isn't Actually a Transmission Problem.

Two Lexus vehicles. Two different platforms. One underlying issue: failing electronic control modules.

At Relentless Motorsports TX, we recently completed repairs on an LS430 and an IS250, both suffering from transmission-related shifting issues caused by faults within their engine control modules.

While harsh shifting, erratic gear changes, and abnormal transmission behavior can often lead owners down the path of expensive transmission diagnostics or replacement, the transmission itself isn't always the culprit.

In certain Lexus applications, deterioration or failure within the ECU can compromise the electronic control responsible for proper transmission operation.

Porsche 911 Turbo (996) | Precision Beyond the Engine

Recently, a customer entrusted Relentless Motorsports TX with a malfunctioning key fob from their Porsche 996 911 Turbo. The remote had become completely unresponsive, leaving the owner unable to operate the vehicle's door locks using the key fob.

Rather than replacing the original unit, we were able to successfully repair it, restoring its functionality and allowing the remote locking system to operate exactly as intended.

Another original Porsche component preserved. Another problem resolved.

Bringing a '90s Legend Back to Life
Today's project: a 1993 Lexus SC300 manual ECU, the brain behind one of the coolest coupes of its era. After 30+ years, that brain needed some serious surgery.
Here's what we tackled:
Trace repair: corroded and damaged circuit paths rebuilt
Full capacitor replacement: those original caps were done
Extensive PCB cleaning: decades of buildup, gone
New fuel injector drivers: so it fires clean and runs right
Leaking capacitors are a silent killer on ECUs from this era. If your classic is running rough, stalling, or throwing strange codes, the problem might not be under the hood. It could be inside the box.

Another Toyota classic getting some attention at Relentless Motorsports TX.

This 3S-GTE ECU from an SW20 MR2 came in for a basic overhaul, which included bench testing and replacement of the capacitors.

Keeping the original electronics in good condition is an important part of keeping these cars on the road. This unit is now serviced and ready to go back to its owner.

Another piece of a classic Lexus brought back to life.

This SC300 climate control unit came into Relentless Motorsports TX completely inoperative. The display wouldn’t power on, several of the illumination bulbs were blown, and the liquid crystal LCD display itself was damaged.

Rather than replacing the entire assembly with another aging used unit and hoping for the best, we went through the original unit, diagnosed the failures, repaired the electronics, replaced the failed lighting, and addressed the damaged LCD display.

The end result: a properly functioning climate control unit ready to go back into the car.

These older Toyota and Lexus electronics are getting harder to replace every year, and good original components are becoming increasingly difficult to find. That’s why we focus on repairing and preserving the customer’s original electronics whenever possible.
