Honda’s 3.5L V6 engines with VCM suffer oil-consumption issues because the factory oil-control rings were built with low tension and easily carbon-up, especially on the rear bank that repeatedly deactivates and runs cold under VCM. The cold cylinders allow oil to pool and varnish to form, causing the rings to stick in their grooves and lose their ability to scrape oil off the walls. Once stuck, oil slips past the rings and burns in the combustion chamber, leading to plug fouling, misfires, excessive consumption, and eventual catalyst damage—making the ring design and VCM strategy the core of the problem.
