Fall is when the Silver Comet earns its reputation. It’s 61.5 paved miles from Smyrna out to the Alabama line, where it joins the Chief Ladiga Trail for about 94.5 continuous miles of old rail grade, which means flat, shaded, and no traffic.

The Cedartown Depot is a short drive from Cedar Creek, so you can ride in the morning and be back at your site by lunch.

Full-hookup RV sites, tent sites, and the Bird’s Nest Lodge are all open through the fall, and northwest Georgia in late October is about as good as riding weather gets.

Clocks go back on Sunday, November 1, which means this coming weekend is the last one with real evening light.

After that, sunset moves up an hour and the whole shape of a camping day changes. Dinner happens in the dark. The fire gets lit earlier and burns longer. And if you fish or golf, you get the sunrise back without setting an alarm for it.

Not a worse season, just a different one, and it’s the stretch of the year we like best.

Plenty of people pull off I-75 at Exit 82 planning to sleep one night and keep driving south. A fair number of them are still here on day four. The 9-hole course is open to the public every day but Monday, there’s a lake to fish without leaving the property, and the clubhouse has a full bar and a billiards tournament every Saturday at 6pm.

November in Ashburn, GA runs about has an average high temperature of 68 degrees, which is the kind of weather you drove south looking for in the first place. Book more than one night at the link in bio. ⛳

Fall is when your dog finally gets the good version of camping. No hot pavement, no panting in the shade at 2pm, no leaving them in the rig while you go do something. Cool mornings mean they can actually come along, whether that's a river trail in the Blue Ridge, a creek bank in northwest Georgia, a dock on a Florida lake, a marina on the North Carolina coast, or nine quiet holes in south Georgia. Every OAR property is pet friendly, leashes required, and several have fenced dog runs for when everybody needs a break from the leash. Bring the dog. October is their month too. 🐕

Here's what's in it:
⛲ The free spring water spigot at Rolater Park. It runs year round, and local lore says a drink means you'll find your way back.
🏊 The stone, spring-fed pool shaped like the state of Georgia. It's only open Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Crappie season on Crescent Lake starts when the water takes its first real drop, and that is right about now. Florida anglers call them specks, and the good stretch runs from here straight through winter into the spring spawn. Troll jigs along the drop-offs and around brush early, and the bite holds a lot longer than it does in August.

Crescent Fish Camp in Crescent City, FL has the ramp, wet slips, fuel, and a bait and tackle shop right on the water, so the boat can be out before sunup if you want it to be. Full-hookup sites, tiny homes, and efficiency cottages are open through the season, and the marina drink service runs Friday-Sunday every week.

Holiday plans get made in October, and the Green River Guest House is the one at Wilderness Cove that fits everybody. It's a whole house on the property in Saluda, NC, so the group stays together under one roof instead of splitting across four campsites.
