This is a Public Service Announcement

Here we are on a Sunday, replacing the FOURTH heater core on one 2002 Dodge truck in the last 3 years. Made in China. This is an 8 hour job, plus A/C. Warranty work. Again. Money lost, customer displeased…
this hurts everyone.

Notice the ā€œRETURNā€ shelf.
2008 Ford F150 cam gear ā€œphaserā€, made in China. In stock at the local dealer.
2010 Ford Focus transmission mount, made in China.
2012 Volkswagen Tiguan, engine oil cooler seals, made in China.
2009 Toyota Camry, airbag ā€œclock springā€, made in China.
2016 Subaru Outback, Fel-Pro engine intake manifold gaskets, made in China.
Not pictured: 2001 Chevy Corvette, front turn signal lamp/lens, GM box, made in China.

When your parts don’t fit correctly, or I can’t trust them, what do we do?
Call out our local government representatives and ask why these parts are not made in America, to higher standards. I spend more time and patience trying to find the best parts for your ride, and sometimes… this is the best that I can do. ā€œscreams aloudā€

2016 Hyundai Elantra GT, 84k miles, towed in as a ā€œcrank, no fireā€. It sounds like no compression, hence the ā€œno fireā€. Customer states it died at the stop light. Yikes. Most any other shop would say, ā€œit needs an engineā€. Not here. We want to know the truth of the matter.

Check Engine Light fault code for intake camshaft position in relation to the crankshaft position. Saw that coming. We removed the engine ā€œvalve coverā€ to examine the camshaft, timing chain, and valve train, and the answer was obvious. The variable intake camshaft gear… the bolts that hold it together had removed themselves. Aye aye aye.

These Kia / Hyundai engines are ā€œvalve bendersā€, and usually that turns the engine into a boat anchor, but I wasn’t convinced. The gear separated from ā€œdriveā€ and left the camshaft in a kinda neutral position, so we ran a camera into the spark plug holes to see the valve faces. Wow, it looks like every valve is seated and no damage has occurred! Chain failure at idle is a much better scenario than high rpm failure.

We removed the oil pan and the remnants of the failed bolts and gear, updated the chain and variable valve timing gears, resealed everything, and boom, a good running engine.

Note: we removed the NEW cam gear bolts and added ā€œLoc-Titeā€ to make sure this never happens again. If only the engineers thought that through? Well we did. Quality is how we roll. Comments in pics

People often call to ask, ā€œcan you work on my import?ā€ Yes. Yes we can and yes we do.

Today was Mercedes AMG day. AMGs are the top of the line Mercedes Benzs. (As if MBs weren’t tall enough šŸ˜‰)

A 2017 C43 with a ā€œcheck fuel capā€ warning. The ā€œpurge valveā€ that vents the gas tank v***r to the intake was leaking, it wouldn’t seal consistently causing the vehicle to use more fuel because of an unmetered vacuum leak. The computer sees the valve activation but thinks the ā€œfuel filler capā€ is loose. We updated both with genuine MB parts.

A 2007 SLK 320 with the horn not working. We traced it back to to an unconnected horn. Don’t know why it was unplugged. We think someone removed the bumper to change a headlight bulb and forgot the reconnect the electrical connector. No idea….

We work on all makes, all models, all the time

2017 Mercedes AMG C43 ā€œSchedule Aā€

This a a V6 twin turbo, automatic all wheel drive roadster. It’s in for its 120K services. We do that. Except for the transmission fluid service… Special tools and software, only available to the dealer is required for this task. Why?! Well, we’ll leave that $12k tr**ny alone.

Oils and fluids updated, door hinges and moonroof tracks lubed, new sparky plugs… try not to break the ignition coil boots and their plastic ā€œsleevesā€ā€¦
We broke two of six. Dammit all. Parts available, high dollar, and no ETA with the incoming snowstorm. So, we took our time, removed the broken lower halves, and epoxied them back into good order. We then reassembled and took it for a final test drive. Guten auto. What a silly idea, plastic. You see, anyone can throw parts at a vehicle, but the real mechanics can fix what’s broke.
Well, long story short, this ā€œdouble A loveā€ cost the driver a third of the dealer price. We used 80% genuine Mercedes parts, 20% aftermarket (air filters), and got it done just in time. Fair time. Right on. Ride on.

2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 comes into the shop. Customer states that the voltmeter gauge ā€fluttersā€ and they have to jump start it a few times. They were concerned that the alternator might be failing.

First of all, we checked the battery connections. GM side post batteries are famous for poor contacts. Sure enough, both positive and negative are loose! Brand new WalMart battery! Yep. The tiny ā€boltsā€œ that connect to the battery have barely any threads left! Someone should’ve updated those. So we did, and everything is good again, no alternator problem.

On our test drive we heard a hella ā€œclunkā€ when going into gear. We know that sound. A quick inspection found the driveshaft ā€œU-jointsā€ ready to fail. The ā€œcenter support bearingā€œ that holds both driveshaft halves to the frame was toasted also! That shaft was wobbling severely and ready to snap the u-joints! We then informed the customer of the upcoming potential disaster. If that shaft separates, it could destroy the fuel tank and even pole vault the vehicle! They transport their little ones everyday and a broken vehicle is not what they need at this time. Much less a catastrophe.

We then removed the driveshaft and updated all 3 u-joints AND the carrier bearing. Oh and we repaired a broken wire on the rear turn signal that wasn’t working.

Don’t second guess the safety of you and your loved ones. We are here to help.

1995 Volvo 940 Turbo. Customer states that the vehicle started running rough so they pulled into a local shop (my previous employer). After a few weeks of delay, customer approved a timing belt update. Shop called customer and said ā€œbring a tow truck, the engine is toast, has no compression.ā€ Drive it in, tow it out? WTF?

Customer brought the vehicle to me and I knew right away what was going on. A quick removal of the timing belt cover revealed that the repair was not done correctly. One of the simplest timing belt set ups was completely out of whack. The camshaft and balance shaft were 45 degrees out from the crankshaft, hence the no compression problem. The engine is not breathing proper!

A quick reset of the belt and the vehicle runs on all 4 cylinders! Now for the test drive…. uh oh. It intermittently sputters and wants to die, only under heavy throttle.
We started wondering about the turbo but when it’s good, it’s good. Hmmm, vacuum leak? A quick exam found a broken vacuum hose under the intake manifold. Repaired that and another drive.. same issue.

Well we did a no-no and sprayed the intake area with highly flammable carburetor cleaner searching for a RPM change.
P**f! Fire! S**t! Dammit!
Houston, we have found the problem! It takes a spark to make ignition and we knew right away what was up. The brief little inferno burned the fumes of the cleaner, no damage to the engine or hood.
The distributor cap on the back side of the engine had a hairline crack in it, so the spark was escaping and not firing the spark plugs! This explains everything! We ordered a top quality cap and rotor and updated both. Guess what? The vehicle runs perfect!
Let this serve as a warning to all ā€œbackyard mechanicsā€ out there… use smoke to test for vacuum leaks and use a test light to check for spark issues! This vehicle had both, and another shop misdiagnosed.

When you need the truth call us. We promise not to burn you or your ride!
