This fall in Kentucky, you can have lunch or a four course dinner aboard a restored 1940s train while rolling through the countryside of bourbon country.

My Old Kentucky Dinner Train departs from Bardstown for a 35 mile journey through central Kentucky, with meals prepared fresh aboard the train and served at your table while the scenery passes outside.

The lunch journey lasts around two hours, while dinner runs for about two and a half hours. Along the route, the train passes Kentucky countryside, woodland, the Jim Beam distillery, the Jesse James safe house and the Jackson Hollow Trestle in Bernheim Forest.

Before boarding, you can stop at the historic depot, where the full service bar carries w**e, b**r, cocktails and more than 35 kinds of bourbon.

The fall menu begins in October, with lunch options including Kentucky classics like pot roast and the Hot Brown. Dinner choices include prime rib, brandy pecan pork, chicken Marsala, teriyaki glazed salmon and creamy tomato pasta, followed by desserts including bourbon pecan pie and their chocolate locomotive filled with chocolate mousse.

Cumberland Island, one of Georgia’s wildest coastal escapes, is a remote barrier island filled with empty beaches, maritime forest, historic ruins and herds of wild horses. Along the shoreline, horses wander across the sand with almost no development in sight, while inland trails disappear beneath huge oak trees draped in Spanish moss. Explore the atmospheric Dungeness Ruins, cycle quiet sandy roads through the forest or camp near Sea Camp and wake up just minutes from the Atlantic. With no cars for visitors, limited ferry access and miles of undeveloped coastline, Cumberland Island feels far more remote than you’d expect from the southeastern United States. Add wildlife, history and some of the most peaceful beaches in Georgia, and it’s one of the state’s best places for a proper escape.
