From Hot VWs Magazine (Official):

In Memory of Bruce Simurda
Editor of Dune Buggies and Hot VWs Magazine, 1989–2017

We are deeply saddened to share the news of Bruce Simurda’s passing. Bruce served as editor of Dune Buggies and Hot VWs Magazine from 1989 to 2017, guiding the publication through nearly three decades of growth, evolution, and unwavering dedication to the air-cooled Volkswagen community.

Bruce began his publishing career in 1981 with Jim Wright of Wright Publishing, the longtime publisher of Dune Buggies and Hot VWs Magazine. He first served as Associate Editor of 3Wheeling magazine and, by the February 1982 issue, had taken over as Editor.

When 3Wheeling transitioned to ATV Sports in 1987, reflecting the rise of four-wheel off-road machines, Bruce continued at the editorial helm.

In 1986, Bruce began serving as Technical Editor for Dune Buggies and Hot VWs magazine, starting with the July issue under then-editor Lane Evans. By the August 1989 issue, he had stepped into the role of Editor—a position he held until 2017, when Shin Mukai of TOA Corporation took over the publication from Wright Publishing.

Bruce’s time at Hot VWs marked a defining chapter in his career—one that left a deep and lasting impact on the VW hobby. His editorial leadership brought consistency, depth, and heart to the magazine. Whether covering iconic events, standout builds, or the people behind them, Bruce’s work reflected his genuine love for the Volkswagen scene and its community.

He will be remembered not only for his editorial talent, but for his integrity, kindness, and passion. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and the many readers and colleagues whose lives he touched.
Rest in peace, Bruce. Thank you for everything.

Very sad to share that Mike Epstein has passed way. 🥲

Mike was the past President of the VVWCA.

He contributed so much to the VW community over the years. He was a VW legend and icon of our organization.

It would not exist without his support.

We will post an update about services, etc. as we get more information.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Epstein family. 🙏

Eric Goodman, President.

A photo dump of images showing several stages of Jake Raby’s processes while creating an “OE inspired” engine for Eric Goodman’s VW Thing. The goal with this engine was to create an engine confusingly similar to original using as many NOS components as possible. High levels of detail were utilized in processing each component, both mechanically and aesthetically. Enjoy the photos and we’ll post more details as Jake Raby completes this 4 year long project at Raby’s Aircooled Technology in the coming days.

After 4 years of collecting NOS VW parts, performing machine work, balancing and final assembly VVWCA Technical Director Jake Raby has completed the engine for VVWCA President Eric Goodman’s 1973 VW 181 “Thing” engine. Here’s a short clip of the engine being tested on the Aircooled Technology engine dyno earlier today.

Wow! What a Superbowl, especially if you like in Kansas City, which I do. I also think, Volkswagen should get a Superbowl ring, that was amazing, if your man enough to cry for Clydesdales, your man enough to cry at this ad, it was wonderful. Have another look.

VW is one of many big companies with Super Bowl 2024 ad spots, but rather than a flashy look at its modern cars, it chose to go the black-and-white route.
