This customer has a bad ujoint in their driveshaft, causing a loud clunk, as well as some issues with steering, and some oil leaks. I'm recommending we do a timing belt as well in order to save the engine in case of failure seeing as the car is at 179k All of that done at a shop would easily total this car mechanically due to their price gouging on parts and labor rates, probably in the realm of $5000 This customer could get all of this done for under $2000 and have a good running car for years to come

Being honest and informative to the owner of the vehicle you're working on will pay off in the end, you build trust in your clientele and show the issues that they are facing, and with confidence explain to them what they can do to alleviate it. There are plenty of mechanics that will glaze over the difficult things and won't even mention it so they can sell you brakes and alignments you don't need. Find yourself a mechanic that is confident in their work and never worry about your vehicles state of repair again

Let me tell you, some repairs are more nerve racking than others, I had a special case on a car where the spark plug shot out and took the threads with it, with the odds against me and the looming possibility of the customer either needing a new cylinder head or engine this car was in dire need of a special type of care most people wouldn't take on. Tapping new threads into a cylinder head and putting in an insert is never easy especially when it is in a spot you cannot see, but after a few hours, patience and confidence I was able to save the customer the woes of either scrapping the car or spending multiple thousands to either replace the engine or cylinder head, hopefully keeping the vehicle on the car for years to come.

Let's talk about brakes; a lot of chains and mobile mechanics don't use lathes in order to save the current rotors that are on the vehicle. Most of the time if it's the cars first brake replacement rotors can be cut with a lathe in order to give an even, flat surface in order for the pads to properly use the entire surface area of the pad. Brakes can be costly! Sometimes reaching up to $1000 depending on the car. A bunch of these places don't even clean and relubricate the slide pins and use subpar pads in order to maximize profits for the business and pass the cost onto you!

Something may be lurking in your engine! Over extending oil changes can cause many issues, sludge build up can cause issues with movement of a lot of internals, stretch your timing chain due to over exertion, cause the car to burn oil if it seizes the oil control rings, or even clog the oil passages if sludge blocks it, causing that internal part to oil starve. Putting off that $80 oil change a few thousand miles might have you spending multiple thousands to fix, keep with manufacturer recommendations and use quality oil.

Battery corrosion: It doesnt have to be a big deal.
Batteries are filled with acids, these acids tend to leak out and cause corrosion onto anything metal that it comes in contact with, this can cause issues with the ability for the connection between the battery and the vehicles battery terminals potentially causing no start conditions. Now before you go out and buy a new battery, have an autoparts store or trusted mechanic test the battery, the battery could still have some life left in it. Also when it comes to cleaning this corrosion, dont spring for the "battery terminal cleaner", this stuff makes more of a mess than it fixes. take some hot water from a coffee maker or heat some up on the stove top (not boiling just hot) and pour it over the corrosion. This will clean the battery terminals better than any store bought cleaner. it may leave some acid on the surface under the car so just be aware of the surface your car is parked on. Some battery terminal protector spray afterwards will prevent any corrosion in the future. But leave the battery terminal cleaner on the shelf!

We all share that similar anxiety about visiting the mechanic. The cost, the underlying issues that you may be made aware of during something as simple as an oil change. I call this page Minus zero automotive because as i tell car owners, the longer you put things off take the cost of the repair and add a zero at the end, we are trying to prevent that from happening. This page is for the outreach of the community to provide more affordable car care and build trust in the mechanic profession. I will be providing tips and tricks as well for people a bit more mechanically inclined, as well as car owners trying to understand their vehicle as well. I hope to be able to build trust as well as help people keep their cars on the road for years to come in an affordable manner and to prevent any costly repairs before they even arise.
