Lesser Know Classic Car history.
Silent film star Tom Mix died in a car accident on October 12, 1940, at the age of 60. The fatal crash occurred when his speeding car rolled into a dry wash near Florence, Arizona. The immediate cause of death was a heavy aluminum suitcase that hit him in the back of the head, breaking his neck. The vehicle: Mix was driving his supercharged yellow 1937 Cord Phaeton convertible.
Location and circumstances: While driving north from Tucson on the unpaved U.S. Highway 80, he failed to see or heed signs for a bridge washout where a highway crew was working.
The crash: Mix lost control of his vehicle and it rolled into a dry riverbed, now known as the Tom Mix Wash.
Cause of death: During the crash, a heavy aluminum suitcase from the backseat was dislodged and flew forward, striking the actor and breaking his neck instantly.
