DON'T scrub in circles while washing. Especially on ceramic coated vehicles.

The ceramic coating is already resisting the contamination on the car. It should be very loose and easy to remove with gentle, straight passes.

There is simply no reason to get aggressive with a coated car. All that aggression will do is wear down the coating and potentially inflict swirls into the finish. Ceramic coatings are NOT scratch-proof, contrary to popular belief.

Long stroke polishers have great cutting power, but they stall more easily than polishers with short throws.

If you're experienced in paint correction, that won't be a problem. You know the conditions under which a free-spinning tool will stall, so you're able to manage without constant monitoring for pad rotation.

If you're less experienced, you will find yourself frustrated and wasting time trying to avoid stalling.

If it's your first time polishing out a car, that may leave you demoralized and exhausted at the end of the day.

You may even decide polishing isn't for you.

But in reality, you're just using a tool that's a little bit too advanced for the level you're at.

So don't give up! Just stick to tools with shorter throws like 8mm and things will be easier as you're learning the ins-and-outs.

Finger painting? 💅 No, not nail polish. We're talking paint polish here. and there's a good reason to get a little "hands-on" with your polish, specifically when you're working a small area like this section near the air grille.

The problem with small areas is that it's hard to spread product out with the machine alone.

Especially when you're working with micro rotary tools. Often they splatter the polish everywhere.

Instead, the best thing to do is spread a little bit of product out with your finger, then approach with your polisher.

You'll instantly pick up fresh lubrication and abrasives without splatter going everywhere. The thin film of product is pulled inward towards the pad instead of spiraling out and making a mess.

It's all about controlling your product placement so it doesn't control you!

How are "beading" and "sheeting" different?

💧 Beading occurs when water forms tight, rounded droplets on a hydrophobic surface.
💦 Sheeting occurs when water spreads into a flatter film and drains more uniformly.

Beading creates a dramatic visual effect, but droplets left to dry can concentrate minerals and leave water spots.

Sheeting may leave fewer isolated droplets, although any remaining water can still spot if allowed to evaporate.

Which one you choose ultimately comes down to personal preference.

Fast setting = smoother passes. It's that simple.

Afraid you'll burn the paint?

That's reasonable, but eventually you will need to get used to higher speeds. Otherwise, especially with gear-driven and rotary tools, you'll experience the "hopping" and "walking" effects that slow you down even more than the speed setting.

Get confident, go to a higher speed, and pretty soon, you'll be making the polisher "dance on paint" as likes to say.

Longer orbit stroke random orbital polishers have a common pitfall: stalling.

It's all about the leverage the outer edges of the pad have on the rotating spindle. On shorter stroke polishers like 8mm or 9mm, you won't experience stalling in the same way.

I know a lot of people out there love their long strokes, but this is the issue I see most often.

❌ AVOID buffing on raised body lines or edges when working on older factory paint, especially if you're a beginner. Here's why.

Factory clear coat, first of all, is very thin. It gets even thinner on edges and raised body lines. And if the car is older, there's a good chance people have already polished the paint BEFORE you, and you don't know how much clear coat material they removed.

For that reason, unless the car is brand new or a custom job with tons of clear coat, avoid buffing on those raised body lines and edges.

Now, a lot of you will say, "Mike, I can buff on raised body lines no problem. What are you talking about?"

That's great! It means you are an EXPERT that can avoid the pitfalls that beginners find themselves in.

But when I'm teaching beginners, like in my detailing classes, I'm going to err on the side of safety, especially when other people's cars are at stake.

🤔 Rotary or gear-driven orbital? If you're a beginner, start with an orbital tool, then implement a rotary once you hit the limits of what an orbital can do. Severe defects, sanding marks... this is where beginners start to find a rotary more useful. Until then, though, a gear-driven orbital will get the job done.

☝️ If you're a beginner interested in leveling up from random orbital but aren't quite ready for rotary, a gear-driven tool is perfect for bridging the gap.

If you can’t comfortably place your hand on the wheel, it’s too hot to clean.

You should NEVER spray cleaner onto a hot wheel. That's how you get drip marks and stains.

Remember, wheel cleaners are designed to dwell, not instantly dry on contact.

If the wheel is hot from driving, braking, or sitting in direct sun, the cleaner can flash too quickly before you have time to properly agitate and rinse it away.

At best, you won't clean anything. At worst, it'll actively stain the wheel face.

Quick rules before cleaning wheels:

✅ Work in the shade
✅ Make sure the wheel is cool to the touch
✅ Spray cleaner from the bottom up
✅ Don’t let cleaner dry on the surface
✅ Rinse thoroughly before moving on

RULE OF THUMB: If you can’t comfortably place your hand on the wheel, it’s too hot to clean.
