What is your dream car and would you pay nearly double list price to have it?

Consumers, salespeople and lenders are treating cars a lot like houses during the last financial crisis: by piling on debt to such a degree that it often exceeds the car’s value. This phenomenon can leave owners trapped.

So who received the winter information email I sent out this past Tuesday and what did you think?

Hey everyone! Wanna read a funny story? Check out our latest blog post about a car that was towed in last week. You'll probably get at good laugh and you will DEFINITELY learn from another persons mistake. Here's the link!

A week ago in Kannapolis, NC our client (lets call him Gamble) hopped in his car and started it up. The Low Fuel light was glaring from the dash and the gas gauge needle seemed to be propped up by the last leg of the letter "E". Immediately he knew he wasn't making it to the gas station before he wo...

Up top this Sentra looked ok but underneath we have tons of rust and quite a few holes. The rear brake lines are flaking apart and nearly every bolt will need a torch to be removed.

So how can we avoid this? What can a buyer do to avoid buying the wrong car if a mechanic isn't available to help them?

1) Check the HISTORY of the vehicle. If it came from a northern state or an area where the roads are salted regularly then it likely will have rust. Beach cars are this way too. Checking where a vehicle was originally sold can make a big difference. Often used northern vehicles are brought to the south to be sold for much more than they would have sold for up north. Cars are worth more in the southern US because less vehicles are rusted.

2) Look closely at anything made of steel under hood. If it's rusty looking you should have the vehicle lifted and inspected underneath before considering purchasing it. If what you see has lost it's shape or worse...has started to flower / peel like an onion then don't buy it. If there is rust under the hood like this it will only be worse underneath the vehicle.

3) Test drive the vehicle. Spongy brakes are sometimes a result of rusted brake rotors, rusted brake pads and/or rusted brake calipers. Frozen or sticking brake components make the brake pedal soft. This causes people to use more force to brake. Higher force can rupture a rusted brake line where it would not on a normal brake line. This can lead to brake failure. Be weary of spongy brakes.

4) Rusty vehicles will cost MUCH more to repair. A simple CV joint repair may require a new spindle, bearing, strut or any other part affected by removal. In some extreme cases the frame may have to be cut and replaced if a repair is prohibited by rust.

I hope this helps you guys some day. There's way more to look for when it comes to rust. These are just a few quick tips.

Have you ever found that your vehicle was a rust bucket?

What do you think I found?

This picture is of a Late 2000's Nissan Sentra. Up top things look normal and there is no major signs of leaks or problems....however, underneath there is a different story to tell. This is a good one to help teach about spotting problems with used cars.

Automation - Makes life easy right? I agree. I'm adding automation into my shop to streamline customer communication and eliminate as much waste as possible. My main concern is those incidents where automation will fail.

Have you ever taken your car to a dealership for service only to have a service advisor who sounds like he knows absolutely nothing about cars? The words coming out of his mouth just don't add up. You might not know much about your car technically but you can tell "This guy is so full of it?!". Well that will increase in the early days of automation.

Tell me your automation pet peeves. What drives you nuts about automated systems?

To those who gave it all. Thank you.

Ford is dropping EVERY car except the Mustang and Focus Active (crossover SUV). With the dawn of electric vehicles on the horizon...how do you feel about this?
