Monday, Oct. 19: Compare your three credit reports side by side ๐
๐ง CREDIT FIX OF THE DAY: Line up all three reports
Equifax, Experian and TransUnion each get information from different sources, so a mistake can show up on one report and not the others.
1. Go to AnnualCreditReport.com, the only official free site, or call 1-877-322-8228. Pull all three reports on the same day. Have your name, address, Social Security number, date of birth and any address from the last two years ready.
2. Save or print each report and label it with the bureau's name and the date.
3. On a sheet of paper, list every account down the left side. Make three columns, one per bureau, and check off which reports show each account. Write in the balance and status next to each one.
4. Circle anything that doesn't match or that you don't recognize: accounts, addresses or hard inquiries. Accounts you never opened can be a sign of identity theft. Report that at IdentityTheft.gov.
5. Keep your chart and copies in one folder, so you're ready to dispute real errors.
๐ฑ CREDIT BUILDER TIP: Become an authorized user
When someone you trust adds you to their card, that card's history can show up on your report and help you build credit.
- Only ask someone who always pays on time and keeps a low balance.
- Have them ask the card company if it reports authorized users to all three bureaus.
- Be careful: their late payments or high balance could hurt your credit too. Never pay a stranger to add you.
โ ๏ธ WATCH OUT: AnnualCreditReport.com and the bureaus won't email, text or call you asking for your Social Security number. Don't click links in those messages.
โ
MYTH OR FACT: Myth: You have to carry a balance on your card to build credit. Fact: Paying in full each month avoids interest and still builds history.
