“Should be a four hour job.”
Ten hours later.
Radiator swap on a fleet truck. Straightforward on paper. Here’s how it actually went:
Wrong parts came in. Drove back. Wrong parts again. Drove back again.
Then it needed a specialty tool nobody had on the truck. So — you guessed it — more driving.
Here’s what nobody tells you about mobile work: the wrench time isn’t the job. The job is everything around the wrench time. Sourcing, driving, waiting, verifying, driving again.
A shop has a parts runner. A mobile guy is the parts runner.
The lesson I keep relearning: verify the part number against the actual component before you leave the counter. Not the VIN. Not the year and model. The part in your hand next to the part on the truck.
Truck’s back in service. Cost me a day I’ll never get back.
