With triple-digit temperatures in the forecast this weekend, we’re expecting an increase in A/C questions, so we wanted to share a few reminders.
RV air conditioners are not designed like the HVAC system in your home. During extreme heat, it’s completely normal for them to run for long periods of time, and the inside of your camper may be warmer than you’d like.
A few things that can help your A/C perform its best:
* Start cooling your camper early in the day.
* Keep blinds and shades closed whenever possible.
* Limit opening the door.
* Avoid using the oven during the hottest part of the day.
* Keep your return air filter clean.
* Park in the shade if you can.
One common misconception is that setting the thermostat to 65° will cool the camper faster. It won’t. It simply tells the A/C to keep running, and during extreme heat it can increase the chance of the evaporator coil freezing up.
If you’re staying at a campground, remember that everyone else is trying to stay cool too. High electrical demand can sometimes cause low voltage, which may prevent your A/C from starting or operating properly. If you have an EMS or surge protector that displays voltage, it’s worth keeping an eye on it.
