Regarding predatory tow practices: I just read a front page story in the Morning Call about a tow company, locally, who has been towing cars off private property. Not sure if the property owners always knew the vehicles were being towed, if proper signage was in place or if the P.D. was notified by the tow company. Regardless, they were towing them a considerable distance, not always being available for people to get their cars back, charging them $300 and not giving the owners the option of credit / debit card use. These practices employed by some tow companies give ALL tow companies a bad name, however, we aren't all like that. There is a remedy for this situation, though. Municipalities can pass ordinances, whereby a vehicle must be towed to and stored within a "reasonable distance". Further, it should be mandated vehicles be released 24/7 and a uniform (and REASONABLE) fee schedule be created and posted. To tow a vehicle properly and safely requires the right equipment and qualified operators, so these tows aren't cheap, but $300 is a bit much. When my company tows from private property, we release on-demand. We charge a fair amount and never tow from outside municipalities (except immediate bordering townships, when requested). People should not be required to travel six miles or more to retrieve their vehicles. Lastly, Pennsylvania State law (Act 110 of 2012) REQUIRES tow operators to accept credit / debit cards, which some tow companies do not. That should be enforced.
It should be noted that I know the owner / operator of the company in question. I like him and respect him, but this HAS to be of concern to me. The reason for my concern is that, inevitably, complaints will prompt state legislators to regulate our industry and that will hurt ALL of us. It's already been quietly discussed and floated by government officials and insurance companies. The problem is that these people / entities have no idea what's required to do this job correctly and securely. When it gets so bad that we wind up with "big brother" looking over our shoulder, we're doomed. Regulation screws up everything and will screw this up, too.
We're all capitalists and deserve to make a living doing what we do. Lord knows I don't do this for free, however, there is a way to do it and a way not. Fast Lane Towing and Austin's Automotive, among others, are examples of professional tow companies who don't operate this way. I like to think M.S.G. is, as well. There are about a half dozen tow companies in the Lehigh Valley with unsavory reputations that are well deserved. It takes years, even decades, to build a positive reputation. It takes one instance like this to ruin it....and that affects us all.
Just my opinion. Some will disagree.
