Did you know that a lithium-ion battery can cause a fire?

Many have wondered if there was a fire at the Shoal Creek Landfill. Yes, a fire occurred on Monday evening and was contained, but it rekindled yesterday. This fire began due to the improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries. Fortunately, it was not a threat to the community and produced no hazardous debris.

The City of Griffin currently has Battery Recycling Stations at each fire department, allowing citizens to properly dispose of lithium-ion batteries. This initiative helps reduce the number of fires caused at the landfill, transfer station, and in household garbage or recycling bins. To increase awareness and educate those bringing in residential yard waste, construction debris, and other garbage, the City is adding a Battery Recycling Station at the landfill and transfer station. Our goal is to encourage visitors to be more mindful of their materials and help identify lithium-ion batteries before they are dumped.

Lithium-ion batteries can be found in various items, including cell phones, laptops, cameras, va**ng devices, power tools, appliances, marine vehicles, electric cars, children's toys, tablets, e-readers, and more. Please be cautious when disposing of batteries and take the extra step to visit one of our Battery Recycling Stations.

Battery Recycling Stations are located at:
Fire Station #1: 314 North Hill Street
Fire Station #2: 1430 Ellis Road
Fire Station #3: 101 Crescent West
Shoal Creek Landfill: 575 Shoal Creek Road (Coming Soon)
Transfer Station: 1515 Industrial Drive (Coming Soon)
