13,000+ Feet on Dirt Bikes — Georgetown to McClellan Mountain 🏔️🏍️
Another Colorado adventure with a bit of history thrown in.
My mate and I headed out from Georgetown, Colorado, with him on his KTM 500 Six Days and me on the Husqvarna FE 501, with one goal — see if we could get the bikes all the way up McClellan Mountain to over 13,000 feet.
Much of the climb follows the old railway grade into Colorado’s historic mining country. It’s pretty incredible to think that more than a century ago, trains were making their way high into these mountains carrying people and supplies to the mines.
Above treeline the character of the ride changes quickly. The air gets thin, the bikes lose power, the trail gets rougher and more exposed, and you’re surrounded by huge views in every direction.
We eventually got both bikes above 13,000 feet, putting us among a relatively small number of places in Colorado where you can take a motorcycle that high on an unpaved motorized route.
For me, that’s what makes these rides special. It’s not just about getting to the top — it’s following old routes, finding the remains of Colorado’s mining and railroad past, and using the bikes to reach places most people will never see.
Two bikes. One old railway grade. Over 13,000 feet. Mission accomplished. 🏍️🏍️⛰️
