Summer 2026 Greek Aegean Part 2 - Meltemi winds meant we spent a lot of time trying to find shelter and avoiding wildfires in Paros, Syros and Serifos. We had been battered enough so decided to head back to the Peloponnese, south of the Greek mainland, where we now find ourselves sheltering for a few days in the bay of Plytra ๐Ÿ’จ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

Summer 2026 in the Greek Aegean Part 1 - After an overnight passage from the Peloponnese island of Kythira, we joined the party crowd in Ios, discovered Kimolos, revisited and finally saw more of the beautiful island of Milos where on 3 previous occasions we have just sought shelter from the strong Meltemi winds โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท

It is now 4 years since Times Like These departed from Jersey and we have now travelled nearly 12,000 miles. Since checking into Greece in June this summer we have revisited some of the Ionian islands as well as ports and anchorages along the Greek mainland, picking up a visitor along the way. We have again travelled around the beautiful and unspoiled Peloponnese to the south of Greece before heading into the Meltemi winds and fantastic Cyclades islands of the Aegean ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท๐ŸŒžโ›ต๏ธ

After a 77 hour calm passage from Malta covering 360 miles we arrived at Nydri Bay on the island of Lefkada. Checking in today has been a very Greek experience as always! 4 visits to Port Police, and 2 visits to Immigration where we learned that if you argue with a woman from Crete then they are likely to shoot you (the male officer explained this to us as his Cretan colleague had just been telling him off for doing the ETIAS passport control incorrectly). Only 1 visit to a very angry woman at Customs who evidently didn't like that we had only filled in the complicated electronic form, which still has glitches after 18 months, an hour before our visit (but you can't fill it in until you have visited the Port Police and have to do both offices on the same day as your arrival). Just as we were about to finish the whole process back at the Port Police office the internet went down and then the office closed at 14.30 before internet resumed to fully process our arrival. Anyway, at least the passport visit was successful and the 90 day clock is now ticking down, and we shouldn't be impounded again this year, fingers crossed ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿ˜ We now have to visit an office back at Nydri to see if their internet is working.

As we prepare to leave our winter berth in Monastir for the summer weโ€™re taking a moment to reflect that our travels on (and off) Times Like These following our recent trip to Egypt (see our personal pages for photos) have now taken us to the sites and/or remains of 6 of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient Worldโ€ฆ and we are not currently planning to visit the 7th in modern day Iraq!

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were remarkable engineering and artistic feats from the Mediterranean and Near East, finalized as a "must-see" list by Greek travelers. Only the Great Pyramid of Giza still stands; the others (Hanging Gardens, Zeus Statue, Artemis Temple, Mausoleum, Colossus, Lighthouse) were destroyed by earthquakes or fire.

The Seven Ancient Wonders:
Great Pyramid of Giza (Egypt): The oldest wonder, constructed around 2600 B.C. as a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu, and the only one still in existence.
Hanging Gardens of Babylon (Iraq): A legendary, likely mythical, terraced garden paradise reportedly built by King Nebuchadnezzar II.
Statue of Zeus at Olympia (Greece): A 40-foot ivory and gold statue created by Phidias in the 5th century B.C. to honor the king of the gods.
Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (Turkey): A massive 6th-century B.C. temple dedicated to the goddess of the hunt, renowned for its size and art.
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (Turkey): An elaborate, structurally magnificent tomb built for King Mausolus in the 4th century B.C..
Colossus of Rhodes (Greece): A gigantic bronze statue of the sun god Helios, standing for less than 60 years before collapsing in an earthquake.
Lighthouse of Alexandria (Egypt): A functional, 300-foot-tall beacon built in the 3rd century B.C., which survived for 1,500 years.

Weโ€™re planning to head off from Monastir in the next couple of days to continue our travels in the eastern Mediterranean.

Before and after pics โ—๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ She scrubs up well with a nice shiny coat of antifoul, gleaming propeller and a new shaft seal and cutlass bearing. Before we sail east once again for the summer season we are first going backpacking around Egypt and maybe Sudan, so look out for the future mummy, sphinx pyramid and Red Sea diving posts ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฌ
