From a Dream to Reality, MUSASA NURSERY SCHOOL IS OPENING! 🎓❤️
What was once a long-held dream is now becoming a beautiful reality.

Months ago, our friends in Melbourne Melbourne Coffee Merchants launched a campaign Supporting Strong Women to build a childcare center for working mothers during coffee season. Through their generosity, and the support of many friends in the Australian coffee community, MUSASA Workplace ECD was born in 2025. 🙏🏽

Just days ago, we celebrated our second intake graduation, and the next cohort begins this September.

But sometimes, when you plant a seed, it grows beyond what you imagined. Just like coffee does.
Today, that small dream has grown into something much bigger, Musasa Nursery School!
A one-level school designed to accommodate over 200 children, aged 3–6 years, across Baby, Middle, and Top Classes.

What makes this journey even more special is where it started. An abandoned house stood quietly on this land for years ; now transformed into a place of hope, learning, and opportunity. A home where young minds will be nurtured and bright futures shaped. ❤️

And perhaps, this is only the beginning. One day, we may go even further and build a primary school. 🚀

We are deeply grateful to our friends in Melbourne and to every partner and supporter who believed in this vision and helped make it possible.

The EXPORT season is kicking in 🚚

As peak harvest winds down, with 90% collected and fly crops running into October; our export season is in full swing.
Dry mill horns roar 16 hours a day, truckloads move, women sorters hone their touch for perfect selection, quality officers are on their feet around the clock, and dozens of cups are cupped daily.

This year has been incredible in both quality and yield. We’re on track to ship 18+ containers (up from just 10 in the last 5 years). What a beautiful turnaround. We believe in a simple truth: “If we can achieve it, that’s not the limit.”

This didn’t happen in a vacuum. It’s the result of:
✅ Daily farmer training & on-site agronomist support ✅ Investment in regenerative agriculture, revitalizing thousands of trees yearly ✅ Incentives for farmers: second payments & member dividends ✅ Major investment in social programs to attract suppliers ✅ Microlot processing at the individual farmer level where quality rewards the producer ✅ Two game-changers: abolition of zoning policy in Rwanda (bringing back 30% of members) and higher market prices that pay farmers better.

Securing 18+ containers, we sent countless samples, many trips, and nonstop conversations with roasters & importers, some partnerships clicked, some didn’t, and that’s okay. We never stop.

Uff, the 2026 season is cooling down, and I’m relieved to share some insights.

It started earlier than the previous one and unfolded in a style never seen before. Between bumpy yields, quality beans, skyrocketing cherry prices, aggressive and foolish competition, wildly unpredicted local cherry transport rules, and a growing shortage of workers at washing stations, this coffee season is wrapping up in a period of market uncertainty, leaving us with many lessons for the years ahead.

Still, farmers are happier, tables are full, workers sometimes pull overtime, machines run nonstop, and managers struggle to keep finances afloat. But above all, trust and direct relationships between producers and importers/roasters have endured every odd, beyond the hurdles and market turbulence.

How could a small cooperative like Dukundekawa Musasa survive without our generous, long-term clients? Those who believed in us, offered upfront bookings on fair, transparent, and quality-driven terms, even through the fog hanging over coffee markets. We are so deeply grateful to every one of you who stood by us on this journey 🙏🏽🙏🏽🥰☕️

What a beautiful celebration of 25 years! 🎉✨

From touring our premises and impact projects to honoring founding members, awarding our first anchor, MINADEF , and paying tribute to individuals who made a difference, this milestone was truly one for the books.

We also celebrated the incredible partners who’ve walked this journey with us: , FSC/Rwanda, , Ltd, , , , , , , BDF, , , and . International coffee buyers were also recognized for their unwavering support. ☕🤝coffee .coffee.inc .coffee .green.pastures and many more💕☕️
Celebration with impact:
🐄 25 cows were distributed to farmers through our livestock support program, bringing the total to over 400 cows since 2008.
📚 21 students graduated from the Musasa Coffee School, investing in skills and livelihoods.
💰 Dividends and premiums were paid to members.
🏆 The Ministry of Defence received a trophy for their long-standing support.

We also honored former RDF staff who made a difference in our early days, including Col (Rtd) Eugene Haguma and Jérôme Mureramanzi, among many others whose contributions left a mark.

The celebration ended with a toast, cake, and farmers heading home with cash dividends, a garden fork, and a bag of coffee. 🎂🧑🌾☕

8. Reinvestment Grant
We don’t just grow coffee. We grow communities..
In 2025, we awarded grants to two cooperatives, selected from a large pool of applicants to revitalize their value chains beyond coffee. Thank you to for making this possible.

🔹 COAGI (Ruli sector): 10 million RWF
🔹 COPROSEBU (Busengo sector): 6 million RWF

Both invested in maize processing machinery and launched their own processing plants.

The result?
✔️ New revenue streams
✔️ Added value to local produce
✔️ Jobs created
✔️ Stronger communities beyond coffee

7. Musasa Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD)
Musasa ECD opened in 2025 with support from the Australian coffee community.
In the remote hills of Dukunde Kawa, women carried a double burden: demanding harvest work and the weight of motherhood. With no safe place for their children, toddlers faced malnutrition and neglect. Mothers were torn, between a paycheck and a child’s well-being.
Then came change.
The Rambagirakawa women’s group built an Early Childhood Development center, right at Ruli CWS where mothers work.
In just one year, more than 92 children have benefited from the center.
🔹 Nearly 200g gained monthly. Healthier. Stronger.
🔹 Days filled with song, play, and learning
🔹 Mothers’ efficiency up 30%
🔹 Absenteeism nearly gone
🔹 Incomes up. Peace of mind? Priceless.
A daily meal from the center’s garden fights stunting and teaches sustainable practices families take home.
What started as childcare became holistic community health.

And we’re just getting started. Soon, this center expands into a full kindergarten, welcoming 200 toddlers into early learning that prepares them for primary school and a future far beyond the coffee fields.
Where mothers work, children thrive.

6. Musasa Development Fund

Musasa Development Fund is a cooperative-run, SACCO-style financial service offering interest-free micro-loans to members for investments, farm inputs, and emergencies.
For most coffee farmers, income comes once a year, during peak harvest from March to June. The remaining nine months? A stretch of uncertainty, covering meals, school fees, and medical bills. Volatile prices and climate shifts only deepen the struggle.

In 2017, our cooperative built a different path: a member-driven micro-savings scheme. Modest contributions, pooled together, became an interest-free fund—circulating entirely within the community.
Today, that fund is the Musasa Development Fund, a registered financial vehicle serving members across the cooperative.

🔹 Loans: 50,000–300,000 RWF
🔹 Repayment aligned with harvest
🔹 Over 150 million RWF disbursed, fully revolving
🔹 99%+ repayment rate
🔹 No collateral required

The result? Steady, year-round income. Less pressure on coffee revenue. Stronger households.
Women, who make up 40% of our membership, are the primary beneficiaries. They’re running small businesses, selling vegetables, handcrafts, raising livestock, building resilience in their rural communities.
What started as a small emergency fund has become a launchpad, turning farmers into entrepreneurs.
Capital built on trust grows dignity, opportunity, and lasting change.

5. Musasa Coffee School ☕️🌱

Founded in 2021, Musasa Coffee School equips the next generation with essential coffee skills, from farming and barista training to cupping and quality analysis, alongside vocational trades like tailoring and weaving.

Over 300 youth have been trained in coffee farming, with 90+ graduates completing advanced coffee programs.

By connecting training to real opportunities in hospitality and the coffee sector, we are creating careers, not just courses. Vocational skills also provide off-season income, helping young people stay rooted in their communities.

We are proud to have employed some graduates, while 20+ youth have been connected to partners across the coffee industry. Others are actively engaged in creative local businesses, contributing to the broader economy.

This dynamic group has now evolved into a youth-led initiative, Imboni (“Vision”), which has rented a collective coffee plot and is preparing to launch its own youth-produced coffee in the near future. Hope to serve this new, futuristic coffee with you soon.

We’re here for the long haul, building a skilled, passionate workforce and strengthening Rwanda’s coffee communities from within. 🇷🇼✨
