Day 37 - A much smoother day, to our delight the roads dramatically improved and we made some good progress. Our spring was struggling even on the good roads so we shoved some tennis balls in to try and give it some extra support.

Day 38 - The speed bumps in Mongolia really sneak up on you. We found this out the hard way... a car in front of us suddenly slammed on their breaks and we immediately did the same. Fortunately we managed to stop a few feet shorts, although unfortunately the exhausted idiots didn’t causing them to crash into the back of us, the micras who where also less fortunate crashed into the exhausted idiots who then crashed into the back of us. Despite 2 crashes into our number the only thing broken was our mud flap. The and didn’t fair as well. We stayed in Ulaanblaatar for the rest of the day trying to get some of the damage repaired before setting off to a yurt camp about an hour outside.

Day 39 - We got up at 5:30 determined to make the finish line before it closed for the day. We would have been successful if it weren’t for a 5 hour border crossing out of Mongolia into Russia. We’ll have to try again tomorrow. @ Bömbögör, Bayanhongor, Mongolia

Day 34 - We got going at 6:30, still with quite a lot of ground to make. Through pure coincidence we bumped into the coming down a dirt track from their camping spot. We convoyed with them to the Russian border, which marked the start of a 4 hour border crossing into Mongolia. On the other side we met a bunch of children who were keen to take anything from our car that they could, luckily Will gave them some UHT milk pots which kept them at bay. We camped just passed Olgii by a lake, where the just happened to be camping too.

Day 32 - Not the greatest of days. After a day of very strange sounds issuing from all over the place we arrived in Barnaul. As we were driving around the city there was a car screeching along side us “god that car doesn’t sound healthily”, oh how ironic... turns out it was ours. We crawled along with a high pitch screeching and a strong smell of burning to find a garage. The first 2 turned us away, however the 3rd told us to come back in the morning.

Day 33 - The next day we staggered into the mechanics to be told that the repair could take 1-2 days or 3-4 depending on which part of our clutch had broken. The car was hoisted up and dismantled to reveal that the release bearing on our clutch had shattered. As long as they could find the part the car could be ready today. We hopelessly wondered around a shopping centre, hoping we’d be able to leave today. 6pm came and the car still wasn’t done however the mechanic agreed to work over time for a bit of extra dollar. At 8:30 we set off, keen to catch up who had left that morning. We drank a lot of caffeine and drove till about 2:30 before pulling up at a truck stop and sleeping in the car. @ Barnaul

We think it’s definitely about time to thank our sponsors. Without their help and generosity we wouldn’t have been able to embark in this crazy adventure. Our benevolent benefactor Frank Blake At the Blake and bailey fund has been instrumental in getting us to this point and carrying on the mongol Knight legacy has been a privilege. Garden art + have been a huge help and were initially able to get the ball rolling for us! We really can’t thank you both enough. Another big thank you to Sherborne for their generous contribution we can’t wait to come back to school and talk to all the boys about our adventure.

Day 15,16,17,18,19,20,21, 22- Some of you might have been wondering where we’ve been... Well we’ve been trying to cross the Caspian Sea. This exciting little adventure has consisted of waiting 2 days for a ferry to arrive and then being loaded into the crew quarters of a cargo boat with a bunch of Turkish truckers. The boat then had a rather large engine failure, causing us to sit, trapped on the boat for 3 days. When we eventually set off we hit a 2 day storm which meant they had to the drop anchor in the middle of the sea and wait it out. Meanwhile the food that was no Michelin to begin with, began to run out, which quickly sparked the conversations of who’d we’d eat first if things got really desperate. It’s hard to summarise the unique interior of this 36 year old, dodgey engined cargo boat so enjoy the photos.

Day 14 - We’ve made it 2 weeks into the trip and somehow Liss has restrained from strangling Gus which I’m sure will surprise you all.
🚗
Having had a few relaxing days in Tiblisi with Lissy’s parents we got back to driving and made our way towards the Caspian Sea. Having been in Azerbaijan for an hour Gus was soon pulled over by the Police for what they described as driving too slow and asked for a $200 payment (bribe) to which Gus kindly declined and negotiated it down to $15.

We’ve now successfully made it 3000 miles (about a 3rd of our total distance) we like to thank asmf for helping us get the car ready! Their expertise and ability to help us source parts has been so useful! Their ‘nothing is too much trouble attitude’ was great. We’d also like to thank Daniels Services in Malvern and Ledbury who came to rescue when the complexity of the car was beyond us (and Lissy’s dad).

Day 10
After getting up at 3:30 and having a very brief health and safety chat that consisted of one piece of advice - “don’t get out of the basket” - we were off. Cappadocia is beautiful from the ground but from the sky it’s something else. Sadly this amazing start to the day has been followed by a long 6 hours of driving. @ Kapadokya/Goreme

Day 7 - Gus celebrated turning 20 in style, waking up in Serbia before having a boil in the bag porridge delight for breakfast and then headed over to Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The crossing was a little bit different to usual with Lissy deciding to go in the ‘All Passports’ lane rather than just the ‘EU’ lane, at least we got a taster of what to expect in a few months.
🚗
Day 8 - Travelling from Plovdiv to Istanbul, where we visited the Blue Mosque and enjoyed a selection of Meeze.
🚗
Day 9 - Waking early and pushing through a gruelling 9 hour drive me arrived in Cappadocia, a national park known for its Wizard Hats and balloon rides - photos to follow. We saw a lovely sunset looking out over Göreme a town made up of hotels built into the rock faces. @ Istanbul, Turkey
