The sixth-generation Corona was released in September 1978. With this model generation, the Corona changed its brand name from Toyopet to Toyota.

The newly designed platform featured a MacPherson strut and coil spring independent front suspension instead of the previous double wishbone system, and a rigid axle rear suspension employed a 4-link and Panhard rod/coil spring system rather than a leaf spring system. All models came with front disc brakes, and high-grade models employed 4-wheel disc brakes. Power steering was available as an option.

The body dimensions remained more or less the same as the previous generation. The styling featured some evolutionary changes from the earlier version, including the SAE-compliant rectangular 4-headlamp design that was popular at the time. In October 1978, a sporty 5-door liftback with the body height 25 mm lower than that of the sedan was added to the lineup, while the 2-door sedan was discontinued. The 2-door hardtop sported opera windows on its rear pillars to broaden the view and also to accentuate the styling. The newly designed shock-absorbing bumpers used a polyurethane material. The five engines that met the 1978 emission standards included 1,600 cc (12T-U), 1,800 cc (13T-U), 1,800 cc EFI (3T-EU), new 2,000 cc SOHC (21R-U), and 2,000 cc DOHC (18R-GEU) units. The transmission could be chosen from 3-, 4-, and 5-speed manual, a 3-speed automatic, and a 4-speed automatic with overdrive.
