Renault to Establish Assembly Plant in Faisalabad

In November 2017, Renault and Al-Futtaim officially declared that they have signed definitive agreements for the exclusive assembly and distribution of Renault branded vehicles in Pakistan.

The French automaker was earlier in talks with Ghandhara Nissan Company but the deal couldn’t shape up. Later in December 2017, Al-Futtaim indicated to begin construction of their assembly plant in Karachi in 2018, while intended to sell their assembled models starting from 2019.

In a recent development, the company has reportedly inked a direct investment agreement worth $150 million to construct an automobile manufacturing plant in M3 Industrial Area Faisalabad, instead of Karachi. According to sources, the Government of Punjab is offering cheaper land to French automaker to establish its plant in the province.

Previously, Renault while in talks with Ghandhara, indicated to begin their operations in Pakistan with the Duster SUV, however now that the French automaker has teamed up with Al-Futtaim, we will have to wait to see which vehicles they introduce here in Pakistan. Better still, we can have a look at the possible options Renault might launch in Pakistan.

GOOGLE EX ENGINEERS MADE SELF DRIVEN CAR, A new startup that proposes a different spin on autonomous transportation came out of stealth today. The company, called Nuro, was founded by two former lead Google engineers who worked on the famed self-driving car project. Unlike the plethora of self-driving startups out there, Nuro isn’t focused on reconfiguring robot taxis or autonomous trucks, but on designing a new type of vehicle altogether.

Nuro is focused on deliveries, specifically the kind that are low-speed, local, and last-mile: groceries, laundry, or your take-out order from Seamless. The startup thinks that automating these services could help shoulder the sharp increase in last-mile deliveries, while also reducing traffic accidents and boosting local businesses who are looking for ways to thrive and compete in the age of Amazon.

Autonomous vehicles are in danger of being turned into “weapons”, leading governments around the world to block cars operated by foreign companies, the head of Baidu’s self-driving car programme has warned. Qi Lu, chief operating officer at the Chinese internet group, said security concerns could become a problem for global carmakers and technology companies, including the US and China. “It has nothing to do with any particular government — it has to do with the very nature of autonomy,” he said on the sidelines of the Consumer Electronics Show last week. “You have an object that is capable of moving by itself. By definition, it is a weapon.”
