Most swirl marks don’t come from the road. They come from the wash.

Dirt is rough. Every little piece of it sitting on your paint is like sandpaper. Drag a sponge over it and it scratches. Do that twice a month for a year and you get that hazy, spiderweb look when the sun hits the hood. Paint doesn’t fix itself. Once those scratches are there, they stay until someone buffs them out.

A proper wash just does things in the right order so that doesn’t happen.

Rinse first. Get the loose dirt off before anything touches the paint. Foam it and let it sit for a bit, so the soap breaks the dirt loose instead of your hand having to scrub it off. Use two buckets: one with soap, one with clean water to rinse your mitt in between. That way the dirt stays in the bucket instead of going back on the car. Dry with a soft towel, and pat it dry instead of wiping.

That’s really all it is. Nothing fancy. It just takes time, and that’s the part most washes skip.

Suzuki Jimny ceramic coated with Gyeon Pure EVO. We pulled the roof rack and spare tire off before starting so nothing got missed. Full decontamination and paint correction before applying a ceramic coating, no exceptions.
