A driver’s license is a privilege - not a right. With it comes with a great responsibility.

WHAT IS A SAFE DRIVER??

• A safe driver is someone who consistently makes decisions that protect life, property, and the road environment—not just for themselves, but for everyone around them.

• It’s not just about knowing how to drive; it’s about how you think, behave, and respond behind the wheel.

> A safe driver is a person who operates a vehicle with full control, awareness, responsibility, and respect for road rules and other road users at all times.

Key Traits of a Safe Driver

1. Awareness They stay alert, constantly scanning the road, anticipating hazards before they happen.

2. Control They maintain proper speed, safe following distance, and smooth handling of the vehicle.

3. Responsibility They obey traffic laws, avoid risky behavior (like speeding or using phones), and understand the consequences of their actions.

4. Defensive mindset. They expect mistakes from others and are prepared to react safely.

5. Emotional Discipline They don’t drive aggressively even in stressful situations—they stay calm and focused.

6. Respect for Others They consider pedestrians, passengers, cyclists, and other drivers—not just themselves.

Our roads have become ill-equipped, hazardous, and a grave yard of preventable deaths.

In Port Moresby, motor vehicle ownership is rising faster than our roads can handle. What was once a small urban road network is now forced to carry thousands more vehicles than it was ever designed for.

The result is visible every day—congestion, dangerous overtaking, pedestrians walking on the edge of traffic, and far too many crashes. We often blame drivers alone, but the truth is deeper.

Poor planning, outdated road design, missing guardrails, weak signage, and unsafe pedestrian spaces are turning our streets into high-risk environments. When infrastructure fails, even a small mistake can cost a life.

As the founder of Road Skills Limited, I have seen firsthand how preventable most of these tragedies are. Every roadside memorial is not just a symbol of loss—it is evidence that our system failed someone who should have made it home.

Road safety is not only about teaching people how to drive; it is about building roads that forgive human error. Cities around the world have proven that better engineering, stronger planning, and proper safety barriers dramatically reduce deaths.

We can do the same here.

We must act now—before more families lose loved ones to crashes that should never have happened.

Safer roads are not a luxury for developed countries. They are a basic right for every citizen of Papua New Guinea.

If we continue to expand vehicle ownership without expanding and upgrading our road infrastructure, we are not building a modern city—we are building a future of preventable funerals. And that is something we must refuse to accept.
