Even though we all require motor vehicles for modern economy and trade, tyres are essential for motor vehicle operation.
One important aspect of tyre maintenance and and selection are the tyre indices. Which include the 3 T tyre index.
In addition to the 3 T Index (Treadwear, Traction, Temperature), tyres display several other important indices and markings that help you understand their specifications and performance:
π 1. Tyre Size Markings
- Format: Example β 205/55 R16
- Breakdown:
- 205: Tyre width in millimeters
- 55: Aspect ratio (height as % of width)
- R: Radial construction
- 16: Rim diameter in inches
π§± 2. Load Index
- Indicates: Maximum weight the tyre can carry
- Example: 91 means the tyre can carry 615 kg
- Important: Must match or exceed your vehicleβs recommended rating
π 3. Speed Rating
- Indicates: Maximum safe speed under load
- Example: V = 240 km/h
- Common Ratings: S, T, H, V, W, Y
π·οΈ 4. EU Tyre Label (in applicable regions)
- Shows:
- Fuel efficiency
- Wet grip performance
- External rolling noise (in decibels)
π§ 5. 3PMSF Symbol (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake)
- Indicates: Tyre is certified for severe snow conditions
- Found on: Winter and all-season tyres
π οΈ 6. OE Markings (Original Equipment)
- Shows: Tyre was designed for a specific car brand
- Examples:
- MO for Mercedes
- AO for Audi
- * for BMW
π 7. DOT Code & Production Date
- Format: DOT ######1017
- Last 4 digits: Week and year of manufacture (e.g. 1017 = 10th week of 2017)
π 8. Tread Wear Indicators (TWI)
- Purpose: Show when tread depth is approaching legal minimum
- Location: Small raised bars in the grooves
π§ͺ 9. Tyre Type & Construction
- Examples:
- P = Passenger tyre
- LT = Light Truck
- R = Radial construction
