It is not every day that a government form says hello. 👋

In 1983, the Dutch cargo ship GLOBE received her Certificate of Registry: a green linen booklet, filled in by hand. The text begins with Queen Beatrix in person. She greets everyone who reads the certificate with a cheerful "saluut!".

At the end, she orders her own officials to receive the captain, his ship and his cargo in a friendly way. The rest of the world, she only asks.

Today's Dutch certificate is three A4 pages, on paper or as a PDF. Same legal job. Very little else in common.

Do you have an old Certificate of Registry in a drawer? We would love to see it.

Here is a quick tip for river and canal cruising 🚤

Your motor yacht needs a Union Inland Navigation Certificate when:
📏 it is longer than 20 metres, or
📦 length × beam × draught is more than 100 m³

What it takes:
✅ the yacht meets the European standard ES-TRIN
✅ the engine meets Stage V emission standards
✅ hull inspection, safety inspection and a trial trip

Your yacht is older? There are no exceptions. The easier rules from 2009-2018 no longer apply.

Built with a CE certificate under 2013/53/EU? Then some of the requirements may already be met.

Your boat is 23.9 metres. Or 24.1. For some flags, those 20 centimetres change the rules. 📏

European registers use different length limits. We see limits at 2, 7, 10, 15 and 24 metres. Just under a limit, the procedure can be simpler, the registration can cost less, and keeping it can cost next to nothing.

Length is not the only factor. Use, age, documents, nationality and costs all count. And a flag that looks expensive today can be the cheapest over ten years.

💡 Here is a quick tip: compare the costs of a flag over about ten years, not only the first fee.

You bought the boat. You paid for it. But is it really yours? 🛥️

A French couple bought a barge from a Dutchman. They spent six years on a refit: new engines, new interior. Ready to leave, they found out the barge was still registered in the name of the seller. And they had no contact with him any more.

The Dutch register did not accept the purchase contract and the proof of payment. No instructions from the registered owner, no deregistration.

We found him in the end: a pipe-smoking sailor with no smartphone. A few days later, the barge was finally theirs. After six years.

💡 Here is a quick tip: make the Certificate of Withdrawal part of the sales agreement. Deregistration is the last step of the sale, and the seller arranges it.

⏱️ 13 days from request to provisional registration

A specialised broker sold a motor sailer that used to be a European navy training vessel. Her new owner will refit and upgrade her, and she will train maritime personnel again.

She is longer than 24 metres, so she needed a survey by a Recognised Organisation (RO) before she could be registered. An RO is a classification society that a flag state has authorised to inspect vessels for it.

Finding an RO surveyor at short notice was the hardest part. Within a few days, we had a specialist flown in. He did the survey and sent in the reports, and the provisional registration was issued. 📄✅

After that, she could sail to her new home. 🌊

The Global Flag State Ranking 2026 is here, and the top of the table barely broke a sweat 😌

Singapore holds onto 1st, with Norway and Denmark simply swapping places behind it, followed by Hong Kong, and Japan rounding out the top five.

But beneath that calm surface, there is plenty going on: Saudi Arabia's climb into green, a puzzling tumble for San Marino, and Europe's strongest (and weakest) flags all worth a closer look.

Curious who is up, who is down, and why your flag's neighbours might matter more than you think? Have a read here: https://buff.ly/yYDOcj8

Re-registering 10 working vessels under one flag is no small task, and that is exactly what we did for EU agency.

The project involved deregistering each vessel from its existing flag state, preparing the documentation, coordinating physical surveys across multiple locations in Europe, and working closely with the Portuguese maritime authorities to get every Certificate of Registry issued.

Managing 10 vessels, spread across different sites, each with a different local operator, it required careful preparation and clear communication at every step.

We have written it all up in a case study. You can read here 👉️ https://buff.ly/Rt0x5jr

Last week, I stepped aboard a client's newly purchased Bermuda Ketch - once owned and operated by a European navy - and stumbled upon something rather curious in the wheelhouse: a single Euro coin 🪙, fixed firmly to the floor.

Now, I am familiar with the old tradition of placing a coin at the foot of the mast. Roman sailors did it to pay their passage to the afterlife should the voyage go badly, and the custom has sailed down through the centuries ever since. But a coin in the wheelhouse? That was new to me.

Here is the puzzle. The vessel dates from the 1960s, yet the coin is a Euro, a currency that did not exist until decades later. So it was clearly placed long after she was built. Which raises the question: if a coin like this is a good luck charm, can it be replaced without upsetting the magic?

I would love to hear your thoughts. Why do you think the coin found its home in the wheelhouse?

Sailing under the Polish flag? Big changes are heading your way. ⚓

New rules are on the horizon for Polish-registered yachts, and they are worth knowing about well in advance. We are talking a 5-year renewal obligation, increased rates, and compulsory inspections.....the sort of things that are far easier to handle when you are not caught by surprise.

The good news? A little preparation now saves plenty of headaches later. We have broken it all down in our latest article, so you will know exactly what is coming and how to get ready.
