Not every parking spot comes with 670 years of history. This one does.
In 1348, the Teutonic Knights built a monastery in the heart of Utrecht, a walled estate for crusaders, priests and nobles, hidden behind the city's medieval defences. Over the centuries it hosted royalty, changed hands under Napoleon, served as a military hospital, and eventually became Utrecht's only 5-star hotel.
A few things worth knowing 👇
🏰 In 1546, Emperor Karel V himself stayed here with his sister Maria of Hungary, attending the chapter meeting of the Order of the Golden Fleece, at the height of ruling the largest European empire of his time.
⚔️ The hotel has three wings: a Medieval Wing at its core, a Napoleonic Wing to the west, and a Roman Wing to the south, each reflecting a different era of its history.
👑 The Bistro Karel 5 sits in the former convent kitchen, now a Michelin-starred restaurant where monks once prepared their meals.
And here's the part most visitors don't know: you can park right inside this national monument, even if you're not staying at the hotel. A short walk from the Oudegracht, Mariaplaats, Nijntje Museum and Sonnenborgh Observatory.
