EV vs Hybrid vs Plug-in Hybrid — what’s actually the difference? ⚡🚗⛽

Welcome to Day 2 of 30 Days of EVs with Vee.

An EV (Electric Vehicle) runs fully on electricity. Its battery powers an electric motor, and when the battery gets low, you plug the car in to charge.

A Hybrid Vehicle combines a petrol engine with an electric motor. Unlike a full EV, a regular hybrid usually doesn’t need to be plugged in. Its battery recovers energy while the car slows down or brakes through regenerative braking, and the petrol engine can also help generate electricity.

A Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) also combines petrol and electric power, but it has a larger battery that can be plugged into an EV charger.

So simply:

⚡ EV: fully electric
⛽⚡ Hybrid: petrol + electric, no regular plug-in charging
🔌⛽⚡ Plug-in Hybrid: petrol + electric + external charging

And that’s the difference between an EV, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid.

What actually makes a car an EV? ⚡🚘

An electric vehicle (EV) doesn’t rely on a petrol engine the same way a traditional car does. Instead, it uses electricity stored in a battery pack to power an electric motor, which then drives the wheels.

Battery → Motor → Wheels.
That’s the foundation.

Over the next 30 days, we’re breaking down electric cars, EV batteries, charging, range, electric motors, regenerative braking, EV maintenance, hybrids, charging stations, battery technology, EV ownership in Nigeria, and the future of electric mobility; without making it unnecessarily complicated.
