Years ago, I would watch the biggest companies appear on television, inside newspapers and on giant billboards.
They had everybody’s attention because they had the money to buy it.
Meanwhile, small businesses like Pamtech were doing good works in oil and gas, but only a few people knew us.
We could supply the uncompromised product, and always 30 minutes call away, we had a flexible payment plan... Buy now and pay later..
We could solve other related business problem for our clients, from advising to consulting and they were all for free.
But we could not afford to announce ourselves to the whole country then. And that was really painful.
You can be very good and still remain poor if the people who need you do not know that you exist.
Then social media arrived and opened the gate.
Suddenly, the small mechanic in Owerri could speak to someone in Abuja. You could see a trader in Aba display her products to customers in London.
The size of your advertising budget was no longer the only thing that decided your visibility.
Social Media became a game changer.... Your story, knowledge, and results could travel in minutes
That was how the game moved from attention to engagement.
People could now like, comment, share, ask questions and send messages.
But another change is happening now because attention is no longer enough because you have engagement.
A person can watch your video, laugh, comment and still never buy from you.
The new destination now that is so powerful is trust.
Now, lets look at the current Dangote Refinery IPO.
Years ago, when companies were offering shares to the public, much of the information travelled through newspapers, television, banks and stockbrokers.
Today, the Dangote IPO is everywhere and every business owners are analysing it freely and will be getting engagement.
Everybody is calculating and eople who have never owned shares are asking how to open investment accounts.
Almost all the WhatsApp groups are discussing the dangote IPO and when you come here on Facebook, its being debated every second.
Now, imagine if this information had appeared only in one newspaper or Television.
How many young Nigerians would have seen it and engaged it to trend.
That is the power of engagement. Social media did not build Dangote Refinery, but it has helped the story of the refinery reach millions of people quickly.
No wonder Dangote businesses embraced social media recentky and had become very active now.
The biggest companies have entered the same space that many small business owners are still treating as a playground.
Make you dey play..... You open your WhatsApp status only to post football arguments.
You use Facebook to fight over politics and religion and then use Instagram to watch other people build their brands.
Meanwhile, your own business is sitting quietly inside your shop, waiting for customers to discover it by miracle.
My brother, visibility is now part of the work.
At Pamtech, social media is more than a place to post adverts, every team member is a content creator.
We will always show the work, show the damaged vehicles before we fix, document the repairs and explain the faults people are having challneges with.
We show you when our container of engines and cars are arriving and we also share customers experiences witb you.
We always show you our Monday morning ritual, our culture, our people, our construction sites and even some of our struggles.
You see, people were not only seeing Pamtech, they were learning from Pamtech and when people learn from you repeatedly, something begins to happen.
They remember you, and understand how you think. They see evidence of your competence and slowly, attention becomes trust.
That is the real goal.
Do not post only because you want people to look at you. Post because you want to become useful to them.
Teach them how to avoid an expensive mistake. Show them what to check before buying and explain the problem your product solves.
Give people something they can use today, even if they do not buy from you immediately.
A useful post can remain inside someone’s mind for months and then one day, their car develops that exact fault.
They remember you and that is how marketing becomes memory and memory becomes money.
Three things every business owner should do now.....
First, treat your social media page like a branch office. Let people clearly understand what you do, who you help and how to reach you.
Second, document solutions, not only products. People are more interested in the pain you remove than the item you sell.
Third, show up consistently. Trust is not built by one viral video. It grows when people keep seeing useful proof that you know what you are doing.
The old game was to shout louder than everyone else to get attention by spending huge money in big media houses.
The next game was to get engagement, more likes and comments.
The new game is to become so useful in the social media and be consistent that people trust you before they ever meet you.
See ehhh, your business may still be small oohh and your office may still be inside one room with only three team members but your story can enter places your legs have never reached.
No play with your social media oohh.
Please share this post.... I charge millions to spill these secrets but I give some for free because I love you and want you to build a great business with me.
