🧤 PETER RUFAI — THE LEGEND WHO TURNED DOWN A THRONE TO DEFEND A NATION'S DREAMS 🇳🇬👑
Born on August 24, 1963, in Lagos, Peter Rufai was the son of a tribal king in Idimu. In 1998, following his father's death, Rufai made a monumental choice — he declined the royal succession to pursue his passion for football, showing an unwavering commitment to the game and his nation.
Known as “Dodo Mayana,” Rufai’s career spanned decades and continents. He starred for Stationery Stores in Lagos, then played in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. Internationally, he earned 65 caps for Nigeria, featuring in two FIFA World Cups (1994, 1998) and helping secure Nigeria's 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph.
Beyond the pitch, he nurtured future stars through his goalkeeping academy in Spain, leaving a lasting legacy. On July 3, 2025, Rufai passed away at 61, marking the end of an era in Nigerian football.
In 2025, a statue in his honor was unveiled at the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex, Lagos State University, immortalizing the goalkeeper who inspired generations.
Peter Rufai didn’t just defend goals — he defended a nation’s pride and dreams. 🖤⚽️
