Water is typically not given to accident victims, even if they express thirst, for the following medical reasons:
1. **Risk of Aspiration**: If the victim is unconscious, semi-conscious, or has reduced reflexes, they might choke on the water, leading to aspiration into the lungs, which can cause severe complications like pneumonia.
2. **Potential Surgery**: Accident victims may need emergency surgery. Drinking water before surgery can increase the risk of vomiting and aspiration while under anesthesia, a condition that can be life-threatening.
3. **Internal Injuries**: If the victim has internal injuries, such as bleeding in the stomach or intestines, water could worsen the situation by increasing pressure or aggravating the injury.
4. **Medical Evaluation**: Drinking water might interfere with diagnostic procedures like imaging or laboratory tests. For instance, a full stomach can make certain scans or treatments less effective.
5. **Shock Management**: In cases of shock, blood flow to the digestive system is reduced. Drinking water in this state might not be properly absorbed, complicating the body's efforts to stabilize.
