The average vehicle listing price has climbed from about KSh 797,000 in 2024 to KSh 1.37 million in 2026. So the cheapest car is not always the best deal. The best deal is the one with no surprises after you pay.

Before you hand over your money, check these 6 things:

✅ 1. Know your total budget. Add the car price, insurance, transfer fees, fuel and servicing. KRA introduced a new CRSP schedule for used vehicles in July 2025, so ask how the car’s value and duty were calculated.

✅ 2. Ask for the service history. A car with records is worth more than one with only a good shine.

✅ 3. Check the auction sheet if it’s an import. It shows the real mileage and condition.

✅ 4. Get an independent mechanic or inspection company to check it. Never rely only on the seller’s word.

✅ 5. Do a proper test drive. Test the brakes, AC, steering and gearbox, and listen for strange noises.

✅ 6. Verify the logbook and make sure the car has no pending issues before you pay.
