Dear Yamura Motors Facebook Friends,

Drivers start your engines!

We kicked off the 2025 race season with the Saginaw Valley SCCA Region at the newly expanded Owosso Speedway facility. This is a great site! We will be back here later in the year for both Saginaw Valley and Detroit region events.

The weather was perfect in the upper 60s and sunny. Brian Smith’s Yamura BMW Z4 was in the 4 car CST class heat completing 6 runs in the morning.

The new limited slip differential changed the feel of the car making it much livelier and better under acceleration. The BMW was prone to understeer when Brian got on the throttle too hard and too early coming out of corners.

Despite this handicap, Brian finished 3rd, not the best result but he improved times on every run.

Our next event will be at Oscoda over Memorial Day weekend. Mark Hall should have the team’s Toyota MR2 ready to go for that one.

Thank you for following us!

Sincerely,

Dear Yamura Motors Facebook Friends:

2024 End of Season Summary

Over the year, the team competed in a total of 20 Autocross races with both the Saginaw and Detroit SCCA Regions. The drivers accumulated a total of 11 wins with 7 for Mark and 4 for Brian. That is the most wins we have ever had in one year!

Brian had the most points for the season in the STR class in the Saginaw Region, but didn’t quite do enough races to claim the championship (minimum 8 required, he did 5). As we reported last time, Mark came in second in the Saginaw points championship.

In total, we crushed about 35 cones (mostly Mark).

Next on the agenda will be attending the Saginaw Valley SCCA Awards Banquet in January.

Sincerely,

“A fine day for motorcar racing” *

Brian Smith took on the Detroit SCCA Region’s best this weekend at the Schoolcraft Training Center in Livonia, MI. He ripped around the course and came away with an impressive 3rd just 1.5 seconds out of 1st place. His BMW was on pace quickly and improved across his 5 runs. The weather cooperated with no rain to deal with on Sunday. All sunshine. Brian had no difficulty finding his way around the track at speed. Watch his best run here:

Looks like just one race remaining for Yamura Motors in 2024, with Brian back at Schoolcraft this coming Sunday. The event will be organized by the Michigan Sports Car Club this time. Brian will be leading the charge in the BMW, as Mark Hall has hung up his helmet for the season.

Go Brian!

Dear Yamura Motors Facebook Friends:

Our Season was like the “Friends” TV Show

“It's like you're always stuck in second gear, when it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year…… (yes, there are a lot of second gear courses).

After competing in 9 races (with his best 8 finishes counting) for the SCCA Saginaw Valley Region, driver Mark Hall lost the 2024 Autocross Championship by a mere 3.89 points. Since the points are based on time, Rob Redick won by about .2 seconds over approximately 50 runs (laps) during the season (not our year).

Congratulations Rob (Mr. Green Miata)!

The past Sunday at the Owens Training Site in Walbridge, Ohio, Brian Smith struggled a bit with the course (you can see the visual of his off-track exploits here) leading to multiple DNFs. He still put in a decent time all things considered (not our day or our week).

A race or two to go for Brian.

Dear Yamura Motors Facebook Friends:

Four for Mom

Yamura Motors dedicated its four race wins in Oscoda on Sunday to driver Mark Hall’s mother, Denise Malone, who passed away on September 16th. Denise was a sports car enthusiast and auto racing fan. She was a “lead foot,” a trait she passed onto Mark. She was a wonderful mother, wife, sister, aunt, and grandmother. Denise will be greatly missed by her friends and family.

The weekend started out with a “bang“ when Mark ran over about 10 cones all at once on Friday during testing. Minor repair was work necessary to fix the left front wheel well of the team’s MR 2.

Brian Smith had no such problems. On the two race days (Saturday and Sunday) he kept his BMW Z4 on the track and slashed his times considerably, winning both events. He also brought along some innovative technology that he himself designed and built: a tire pyrometer, which digitally measures and records the temperature of each of the car’s tires in three locations - inside, center and middle. This helped him adjust his tire pressures to perfection so that he could make up valuable time on the course. Pretty nifty!

In Mark’s E Street Class, it was a “battle royale” again with Rob Redick in his speedy green Miata. On both days, the events were settled on the last runs with Mark squeaking by just tenths of a second in both events. Four for four for Yamura Motors in one weekend. That has never happened before!

Mark’s season is over; however, Brian will be contesting a few more races. We will keep you updated.

Sincerely,

Dear Yamura Motors Facebook Friends:

First Win!

On this day, 40 years ago, Yamura Motors driver Mark Hall scored his first sanctioned motorsports victory. The United Way Monroe Grand Prix was held in downtown Monroe with approximately 3,000 spectators attending and raising money for a very good cause.

After starting almost last in the 1st heat of 20 plus Karts, Mark worked his way up to 5th by the end of the event. In the 2nd heat, he started up near the front and passed the leader with one lap to go to secure a win in the 2nd heat.

The overall winner was determined by the combined finishes of the two heats. To his everlasting shock, Mark was declared the winner overall! Time does fly by, doesn’t it?

Dear Yamura Motors Facebook Friends:

Momma said, “There will be days like these”!

This past weekend was a rough one at Toledo Express Airport for the Yamura Motors Racing Team. Brian Smith ended up in 6th in the STR class in his BMW. He had a few issues which hurt his efforts, like forgetting to turn off the stability controls for the first 3 runs, and water got into the battery box from a cooler in his trunk. Brian did find out you can use a tire sprayer bottle hose as siphon for the spill (normally we use that device to cool off the tires on hot days for better traction).

After 4 runs on the long smooth track, he did manage to take 1.5 seconds off his original time. A good improvement. Hopefully, that will help his momentum going into the next race.

Mark Hall did not plan to go to the Toledo race. He and Brian will both be back in action on October 5th and 6th in Oscoda at Wurtsmith Airport. Mark has a very slim chance at winning the season point battle with Rob Redick, who is way out in the lead. This will be the final race weekend of competition for the Saginaw Region SCCA Autocross Series.

Dear Yamura Motors Facebook Friends:

Comeback!

Brian Smith had a great outing at the Schoolcraft Test Track this past Saturday. He was able to rally his BMW from an early second-to-last place to second place overall in the Street Touring R class!

After 6 total runs for the day, he beat out 4 of the 5 Miata’s entered. In the end, he was only .6 seconds behind the lead driver. That is a distance of just over a car length.

Many modifications have been made to Brian’s car and he has been hard at work adjusting to the increasing speed and handling characteristics. All of this has really paid off for the Yamura Motors pilot. Another win is in the cards for him soon.

Mark Hall did not make the event due to illness, but he should be back for the next one at Michigan International Speedway on the 15th of September.

Sincerely,

Dear Yamura Motors Facebook Friends:

Monsoon, Rain, then Dryness!

In Oscoda this weekend, we had to manage all the elements! On Saturday morning, the heavens opened, and Mark Hall (in the team’s Toyota MR 2) “Splish Splashed” through his first five runs, opening up a big lead in E Street over his nemesis Rob Redick in the green Black Cat Racing Miata. Then, in the afternoon, it all dried out and with three runs to go Rob closed in and set the fastest time for the E Street Class on his last run. Mark took to the track for his final shot at victory and squeezed out an even faster lap to win Saturday’s contest by one second.

On Sunday, it was nice and dry with Rob setting the pace from the get-go. Mark kept trying to close in, but Rob kept going faster and faster. On his final run of 6, Mark could not overtake the Miata driver and finished .251 seconds behind. Close, but no cigar.

One win for Mark and one for Rob. There are only two races left in the Saginaw Valley SCCA Season and Mr. Redick has a big points lead. The Yamura Team would have to win both races by a huge margin to have a chance to win the championship. Stay tuned for those races coming up on October 5th and 6th in Oscoda.

A big thank you to Marion and Virginia Hall for coming out to cheer on the Team!

Our next race will be in the Detroit Region at the Schoolcraft Test Track on August 31st.

Dear Yamura Motors Facebook Friends:

Exhibition Race Fun!

Brian Smith took advantage of a non-points race day at Owosso Speedway to get valuable seat time. He raced his “Bimmer” to a solid 2nd place finish in the STR Class. His numerous modifications to the car seem to be bearing fruit. Friend Rob Redick set the fastest time in E Street.

This was the first Autocross race at Owosso Speedway. The owner has been making huge improvements to the facility, adding lots of concrete. The track had several high-speed sections. Laps were in the 27 to 28 second range.

Yamura Motors teammate Mark Hall skipped the event this time but is looking forward to racing there in the future. Another place to race is always good!

Thank you for keeping up with our race reports!

Dear Yamura Motors Facebook Friends:

A Good Weekend!

This past Sunday, team driver, Brian Smith, piloted his silver BMW to an impressive 3rd place finish in the STR Class. The race took place at the Schoolcraft Testing Facility in Livonia, Michigan, under sunny skies (for once this year, no rain). He has made numerous modifications to get the car up to speed with more to come so he can compete for more wins this year.

Brian had to fight off some heavy oversteer (rear of the car coming around), making his finish more impressive. You will see from the attached photos he has like seventeen cameras bolted on to record his runs. That will help with reviewing what went right and what went wrong.

Mark Hall did not compete at Barstow Airport over the weekend, but will be entering races beginning in August. We have several races to go this year, all over the state.

Thank you for reading about our exploits!

Dear Yamura Motors Facebook Friends:

A Sad Couple of Weeks

Two of our Autocross Racing friends recently passed away of natural causes. They were far too young to be taken from us. Chris Bolt, who competed in an MR2 in the E Street Class against Mark Hall, passed away two weeks ago. He had raced just the week before. A very tough competitor with a great sense of humor. He won many races over the years. No matter how hard he tried, Mark never did beat him.

Chris Pruett piloted an immaculate white Formula Ford in the Saginaw Region. He raced nationally and won a number of titles and races. Another great person. Both will be greatly missed. We have dedicated the rest of our season to their memory.

The team skipped the race in the UP and, instead, raced on June 22nd and June 23rd in Oscoda. Mark Hall won both Detroit Region races by default, as there were no other entries in his class. Ho hum. Another test weekend.

The following week, we were back in Oscoda and Brian Smith was back in the saddle racing his Yamura BMW taking first place on Saturday and Sunday in the Street Touring R class!

Mark Hall and Rob Redick once again dueled for the win in E Street on both race days. Rob was victorious on Saturday, crushing Mark by 3 seconds (really, that is soul crushing). Mark could not keep his car on the track with 5 DNFs over 6 runs in the morning session. No way to make up for that loss of time in the afternoon.

On Sunday, Mark was able to get his act together, only running off the track once during his 6 attempts, ending up just over 1 second ahead of Rob. So far this season, 3 wins for Rob and 2 for Mark.

The next race for Yamura Motors will be at Barstow Airport on July 7th. We will “try” to keep it on the runway this time.

Sincerely,

Yamura Motors Racing Team
