Today I completed the final campaign of friction tests using rubber disks sliding against a corundum wheel, with sand introduced as a third-body contaminant in the contact.

The campaign included 20 experimental runs, varying sliding velocity and sand flow rate, with the goal of understanding how solid contaminants alter friction and wear mechanisms in elastomers.

These tests directly connect experimental evidence with what decades of literature describe:

• the transition between adhesion and hysteresis,
• the role of sliding velocity in viscoelastic regimes,
• and the critical impact of third bodies in reducing real contact area and promoting abrasive wear.

Now comes a quieter — and equally important — phase: data processing, analysis, and comparison with classical rubber friction models.
Research is exactly this: measure, question, repeat — until it makes sense.

Exploring the effects of sand contamination on rubber rolling contacts.

A three body contact increases the complexity of the rubber friction phenomena since it provides an unpredictable effect, it can raise or it can reduce friction.

Another test day. Today I'm investigating rubber friction and wear when the contact is contaminated with sand or some dirt.

This is a very common situation in automotive tires since roads are not fully clean.

This was interesting. It started with great expectations regarding the tribology test that was planned to do. Now, my rubber samples were worn by a rough grind stone. However , this time we introduced a contaminant, 250 micron sand particles.

I'm still working on data analysis, but the main point is the small event at the beginning of the test. After the laboratory technician required the operation parameters, I informed him of a slightly higher velocity than usual...100x higher sample (rubber disc) velocity.

Despite this mistake that could result in a complete disaster, I actually accidentally inputted an interesting test condition: extremely high velocity. As a result, I could observe the wear rate that I was trying in the last 12 months.

Additionally, this condition also closes my samples to tire conditions under high speed braking.

Sorry to my colleagues from the lab for my mistake. SE EU ERREI, FOI TENTANDO ACERTAR. AHAHAHA.
