Flying Falcons SAE Aero Design team of MIT Group of Institutions. The MIT Group of Institutions' team is student organized and led by undergraduate students and seniors.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) international Aero Design Competition challenges students to design, build, and fly a radio controlled airplane capable of lifting an internally stored payload within design constraints. Sophomores, juniors, as well as other seniors apply to participate. The team is structured to emulate the real-world engineering environment where business and technical a

spects of the design must be considered. Members of the team are divided into technical teams and business teams. The technical teams consist of four specialties: aerodynamics, structures, stability & control, and metrology & operations. Some students are also members of business teams consisting of finance, fundraising, procurement, and documentation.

Interesting Bits #3

The Antonov An-225 was designed to airlift the Energia rocket's boosters and the Buran space shuttle for the Soviet space program. It was developed as a replacement for the Myasishchev VM-T. The An-225's original mission and objectives are almost identical to that of the United States' Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.

An-225 with Buran atop lands at the Paris Air Show in 1989.
The An-225 first flew on 21 December 1988 with a 74 minute flight from Kiev. The aircraft was on static display at the Paris Air Show in 1989 and it flew during the public days at the Farnborough air show in 1990. Two aircraft were ordered, but only one An-225 (registration CCCP-82060 later UR-82060) was finished. It can carry ultra-heavy and oversize freight, up to 250,000 kg (550,000 lb) internally, or 200,000 kg (440,000 lb) on the upper fuselage. Cargo on the upper fuselage can be 70 metres (230 ft) long.

The history of aviation has extended over more than two thousand years from the earliest attempts in kites and gliders to powered heavier-than-air, supersonic and hypersonic flight.
The first form of man-made flying objects were kites.
The earliest known record of kite flying is from around 200 BC in China, when a general flew a kite over enemy territory to calculate the length of tunnel required to enter the region.
Yuan Huangtou, a Chinese prince, survived by tying himself to the kite.
Leonardo da Vinci's (15th c.) dream of flight found expression in several designs, but he did not attempt to demonstrate his ideas by actually constructing them.
With the efforts to analyze the atmosphere in the 17th and 18th century, gases such as hydrogen were discovered which in turn led to the invention of hydrogen balloons.
Various theories in mechanics by physicists during the same period of time, notably fluid dynamics and Newton's laws of motion, led to the foundation of modern aerodynamics.
Tethered balloons filled with hot air were used in the first half of the 19th century and saw considerable action in several mid-century wars, most notably the American Civil War, where balloons provided observation during the Battle of Petersburg.
Experiments with gliders provided the groundwork for heavier-than-air craft, and by the early 20th century advances in engine technology and aerodynamics made controlled, powered flight possible for the first time.

When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.

What is aerodynamics? The word comes from two Greek words: aerios, concerning the air, and dynamis, which means force. Aerodynamics is the study of forces and the resulting motion of objects through the air. Judging from the story of Daedalus and Icarus, humans have been interested in aerodynamics and flying for thousands of years, although flying in a heavier-than-air machine has been possible only in the last hundred years. Aerodynamics affects the motion of a large airliner,a model rocket, a beach ball thrown near the shore, or a kite flying high overhead. The swing bowls bowled by cricketers gets its curve from aerodynamics.
