The visit to TATA MOTORS LIMITED (Pantnagar) was one life time experience for the students of College Of Engineering (TMU). Upon entering the factory premises, we were welcomed by their Training department on duty who guided us through the factory and explained the concept of production of Vehicles in the factory situated in Pantnagar. They stressed on the various vehicle like TATA Magic, TATA ACE, TATA Venture. The students were also told about History of TATA Industry and its other organizations like Hotel TAJ, TATA Steel, Tata Airlines etc. The plant in Pantnagar is just into the production of small commercial vehicle beside this plant also has one Flexible line on which they can manufacture any vehicle presently on flexible line TATA Venture were being manufactured. The plant now produces an average of 1200 vehicles, presently they have bottleneck at Paint shop so they are planning to expand their paint shop as its production rate of paint shop is lowest after removing this bottle neck they can increase their overall production to 1600 vehicle per day.
After a brief introduction of Company in Training department we were taken to the dining hall for lunch. The capacity of that hall was 3500 and their management in dining hall and quality of Food was excellent. After lunch we proceed toward the shop floor.
First of all, we were shown by our guide the welding shop. The very first thing that impressed us was the cleanliness of the factory shop floor. It was absolutely s**c and span with smartly dressed workers performing their duties. We saw how rigorously the part spot welding was going on. We were told about how the machine works along the x, y, and z axis, how current along with pressure is used as in spot welding. We also found that all the controls in the machines being manufactured are automated with computerized controls, thus reducing the amount of work and error that an employee does.
After that we went to engine assembly shop where we were shown the assembly of engine. There were three separate lines for assembly operations of different engine at plant in the engine assembly shop we were shown the assembly of two and four cylinder diesel engine assembly. After assembly they undergo manual as well automatic testing if engine passes all tests it is transfer to vehicle assembly shop where it is fitted into the vehicle.
In last we went to vehicle assembly line there we were shown the assembly of various vehicle like TATA Magic, TATA ACE, TATA Venture. There were different lines for different vehicle. In an assembly line, car assembly is split between several stations, all working simultaneously. When one station is finished with a car, it passes it on to the next with the help of conveyer. By having four stations, a total of four different cars can be operated on at the same time, each one at a different stage of its assembly as discussed earlier there were three specific vehicle line and one flexible line.
There were many other department like Maintenance, Quality control, Power Supply etc which we could not visit due to short of time. So after visiting the main shops we return to the training department and there student clear their doubts and they also discuss about upcoming technologies. That session was also very fruitful for me as well as I also learn some new thing through that discussion. In the end we all had tea went back to our bus.
The industrial visit was a great learning experience for all of us as we came to know how organization functions in real life situations and how the Technical concepts studied in College are practiced in reality. This trip also helped us in gaining invaluable knowledge about how a company works to achieve high quality error free production continuously. On the whole the industrial visit was a highly educative one allowing the students to learn to deal with real life situations in the managerial field. We request our college management and CRC deptt to look forward for more such trips to be organized for Students by our Institute.
