We Indians care a lot about a good mileage.

Sharing some tips on 'how to increase it'. :)


We have noted down some points here, some of them are very basic, to increase your mileage. Be it petrol or diesel. Please suggest more [or correct] me if needed. Tip order goes with their importance. Most important first, least important last.

Get your car serviced on regular intervals.

Check pressure of Air in tyres. It could increase/decrease mileage by 5 percent.

Turning on AC could decrease your mileage by 10-15 percent. If possible try to avoid use of AC if not necessary.

Instead of decreasing speed of fan, try to change temperature. For example if you feel freezing on 23 C, instead of changing fan speed to low try to increase temperature to 25-26.

On high speed, mostly on highways, avoid driving with windows rolled down. You can roll down glasses slightly for ventilation OR turn on fan only. Maintain aerodynamics.
Ride on the possible highest gear. Engine consumes more fuel on lower gears. Maintain RPM.

Unload unnecessary luggage. The more you carry, the more you lose.

If you are waiting for someone or on traffic signal, and car is not moving, turn off engine. Starting an engine only takes 5 secs of fuel it consumes when car is standing steel with engine on.

Try to avoid unnecessary use of clutch. Use only if necessary. Like while standstill, changing gear and in traffic.

We have also heard, Riding behind steady going truck or such big vehicle would increase your highway mileage. Be careful. It is too dangerous!
