Up and coming chances to the learner permit from 1st November 2026.
The learner permit rule changes effective from 1 November 2026 https://www.rsa.ie/services/learner-drivers/learner-permit/multiple-learner-permits require that any learner who has held 4 or more years of learner permits must have undergone a driving test within the previous two years before they can take out a further learner permit in the category. If that is not the case, the learner must start from the beginning again by taking out a 1st learner permit, passing the relevant theory test and undergoing the necessary training as a 1st learner permit holder (EDT or IBT as applicable). Any learner who has held a learner permit for 7 years or more, irrespective of whether they have undergone a test in the previous two years, must also commence the learning to drive process as outlined above.
All holders of a 3rd or subsequent learner permit have been contacted earlier this year to inform them of this, and the RSA will continue to communicate this to the public.
