All these old cables came out of a client's boat last week. We needed space to fit a couple of new cables and it was decided to invest some time removing "a couple" of old unconnected cables...

It always ends being so a satisfying when you see the final job done!!!

First some theory inside: screen presentation combined with handling engine parts and demonstrations. But at the end... everyone's favourite part: time to play!

We get out, we apply what we learned on the engines, we get them to make some noise and we can see some live diagnosis.

It's the most interactive part and we all really enjoy it always!

Basic Marine Diesel Engine course

"Fantastic course - highly recommend it to all. Lots of detail provided alongside practical demonstration. A good mix of classroom setting and hands on. All questions were welcomed and answered and lots of fun had by all. Thanks again for a great day."

Meet our diesel training engine!

It's a Yanmar 3GM30F. Indirect cooled, 3 cylinder, 4 stroke Marine Diesel

Originally from a launch in a sailing club in Dún Laoghaire, it was replaced due to high crankcase pressure.
Instead of fixing this, it has been left as is, as a great example to trainees of how an engine shouldn't be working and how to diagnose the issue.

The engine has been mounted on a trolley and has fuel and electrical systems connected, so it can be run for short periods on the for demonstration.

During our Basic Marine Diesel Engine Course, the theory is explained on screen and then demonstrated on the engine itself.

Who can think of a good name for our engine?
1st suggestion is the "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang engine"!

Different yard this week... all the way to Greece.

As many of you know, we have our own sailing boat. She's in storage in Greece, and after 2 years, it was time for a short visit to check that everything is in order, do a quick maintenance and close her again hoping to be sailing soon.

If you know Lloyd you know he has a thing for the "unusual". Gadgets, cars... and of course boats! Ambrym is a 1979 Endurance 40 Ferrocement schooner. Yes, 2 masts, yes, made of cement. The perfect boat for us!

The engines on her are not that unusual though. A very reliable 40hp Yanmar that runs always perfect. And a equally trustworthy Mercury 9.9 outboard for the dingy. But specially storing them for long periods, maintenance and winterisation are key! And we take it very seriously.

Luckily everything looked great, no major leaks, no humidity, 1 battery looks dead but that's all... not too bad!

Ambrym see you again soon!!

Where are our courses in Dún Laoghaire held?

We are very happy to get to be using the new modular building in the Carlisle Pier for our marine training courses.

Part of the National Watersport Campus initiatives, it is located close to all the facilities, sailing clubs and cafes and restaurants. Beside the train station and with lots of parking spaces.

When the modular building is not being used as Customs for the Cruisers, it's original purpose, it's fantastic for our courses: big screen, plenty of space to display all our engines, easy access to the outside for the demonstrations, and great views of the pier!

We will be there again next Sunday 25th October, with out BASIC BOAT ELECTRICS COURSE. Spaces still available!

Shhhh... if you are in one of our courses and the "social media girls" sneak in to make some pictures... just ignore them.

They will try to be silent and not interrupt much. Well at least one will. The apprentice might try to get everyone's attention! We are working on that 🤣

(Of course we will ask for consent before using the pictures!)

Even on new boats, electrics can be confusing, but once a few years old and a few things added to the system... Well, then no one can remember which wire is which?!

Do you want to know how to fix your own bilge pump? Test your batteries?

BASIC BOAT ELECTRICS COURSE

The course alternates between a presentation on screen and a practical session looking at how to use a multimeter, how to crimp properly, etc.

We will cover topics as: understanding what "12V DC" means, battery times and maintenance, charging systems, solar panels, anodes. Also more practical ones as checks & fault-finding, how to use a multimeter, best practice on joining wires and terminating wires...
