Colin Edwards entered his first motocross race at four, moving to road racing in 1991 where he went undefeated in every amateur event he entered and claiming numerous titles. Edwards turned professional at the start of 1992 and took the AMA 250cc title over challenger Kenny Roberts, Jr. In 1995 he was offered a factory position with Yamaha in World Superbike, claiming the crown in 2000 with Honda, finishing second to Troy Bayliss in 2001, then taking the title from Bayliss in 2002. Edwards stepped up to MotoGP in 2003 with the Aprilia team, achieving his first podium the next year with Telefonica Movistar Honda. 2005 saw the Texan with factory Yamaha alongside Valentino Rossi for his best season finish of 4th. He finished 2009 5th overall before moving to the satellite Tech 3 team, where he remained for two seasons. 2012 sees Edwards embark on a new adventure with the NGM Mobile Forward Racing team and their CRT project.

Jorge Lorenzo started his GP career in 2002 in the 125cc class and moved onto the 250cc category in 2005, clinching back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007. He entered the premier class the following year with the Factory Yamaha team, claiming the Rookie of the Year title and 4th overall after a blistering debut - the most successful debutante since the start of the four-stroke era. In 2009 he finished runner-up behind team mate Valentino Rossi, winning four races and taking additional nine podiums. 2010 saw him convert his potential into a World Champion title after a season-long display of intelligent riding put him on the podium for the first 12 consecutive races. The Mallorcan finished runner-up in 2011 despite missing two races, and for 2012 remains with the Factory Yamaha team for a fourth season which he will contest on the new 1000cc machinery.
