In 1983, Mercedes-Benz introduced the high-performance 190 E 2.3-16, bringing a new racing spirit to the W201 series. Combining lightweight construction, everyday practicality, and a Cosworth-tuned performance engine, the iconic “Baby Benz” redefined the sporting character of Mercedes-Benz.
From its integrated rear spoiler to its purposeful body lines, the 190 E 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 struck a distinctive balance between elegance and racing intent. Multi-link rear suspension, sports-tuned damping, a dog-leg Getrag five-speed manual gearbox, limited-slip differential, and additional centre-console instruments all came together to deliver sharp, engaging, driver-focused performance.
Its legacy was proven far beyond the road. In 1983, the 190 E 2.3-16 completed a 50,000 km endurance run at the Nardò high-speed test track in Italy, setting 3 world records and 9 class records. One year later, at the opening race of the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit, Ayrton Senna drove the same model to victory against a field of top racing drivers — securing its place in motorsport history.
