Introducing Lyle Stantiford - RYA Advanced Powerboat instructor, SRC assessor and Radar instructor

Lyle has over 30 years of powerboating experience, having first taken to the water at the age of eight on the family boat with his father.

He holds MCA Master 200GT and Officer of the Watch 500GT qualifications, and achieved his RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Commercial Endorsement at the age of 18.

At 21, Lyle started his own angling charter business, which he ran successfully for 14 years, operating trips around Dorset, Devon, and the Channel Islands.

Alongside this, he has given 20 years of service as a volunteer with Weymouth RNLI, where he has served as Coxswain, Helm, and Mechanic.

He also spent four years as a Coastal Lifeboat Trainer for the RNLI, specialising in all aspects of training, including boat handling in all weathers, onboard propulsion systems, water jets and outboards, as well as search and rescue, seamanship, and navigation.

Lyle is now an Area Operations Manager and brings experience across vessels ranging from 4 to 28 metres.

His broad operational background, combined with his specialist understanding of different learning approaches, makes him a highly capable and adaptable instructor.

In 2025, Lyle qualified as an RYA Advanced powerboat Instructor and does private tuition and own boat tuition allowing people to get the best out of their own boats.

Lyle regularly teaches RYA Powerboat level 2, Intermediate and advanced courses as well as running our SRC Courses for those wishing to use VHF radios. In addition to this, Lyle recently qualified as an RYA Radar Instructor and will be running our first course towards the end of the year

Looking to do your Personal watercraft proficiency course? (Jet skis to most of us!)
We are running this 1 day course on the 3rd July and have a number of spaces left.

Whether you want to have a go on holiday or buy your own machine, our Personal Watercraft Proficiency course will teach you how to get the best from it and stay safe on the water.
Many UK harbours require PW riders to hold an RYA qualification to launch. You may also need an RYA certificate or ICC if you want to use your PW abroad.

We have a number of places for shared ski where you share the ski with 1 other person. The course is accompanied by our powerboat so when not actively riding the ski, you wait on the powerboat unless you are with friends and family and then you are welcome to stay on the ski whilst the other person drives.

The course is run in conjunction with Jurassic Jetski Tours Ltd and their experienced instructors and top of the range Skis.

This week, as part of our focus on the team, we are introducing Clare, one of our Powerboat and SRC instructors.

Clare Elliott-Baker
Clare has been working full-time in the maritime industry for the last 15 years and has been around boats for much of her life.
During this time, Clare has focused on gaining experience and qualifications, including:
- Yachtmaster Offshore commercially endorsed skipper
- RYA Powerboat Trainer
- VHF/SRC instructor and assessor

Clare ran an RYA and MCA sea school for 10 years and now works freelance across the South Coast.
As part of this, Clare was also a test skipper for RIBCRAFT UK & Europe for 8 years and worked on many film and media projects for them.

Clare runs Powerboat Level 2 courses and radio courses for Weymouth Powerboat Training and, over the years, has received some excellent feedback.

"Loved every minute! The tuition and course content were spot on. The pace was well considered, and Clare is one of those rare experts who is also approachable and down-to-earth."

Outside of teaching, Clare has also been involved in all sorts of work on the water, including filming for TV and movies, deliveries, safety boat work, towing, and, of course, training. If that wasn't enough, Clare also recently restored an offshore racing yacht and successfully ran a Fastnet campaign.

Clare will be running a number of our courses through 2026 alongside running her own dog-walking business www.portlandpaws.co.uk

An amazing weekend for a Powerboat Level 2 course.
With the best weather of the year, a massive fair in the square and some great students it was always going to be a good course.
The feedback sums it up nicely though

My partner and I have just completed the Powerboat level 2 course over 2 days with Tim. It is an absolutely brilliant course that we cannot both stop talking about. We learnt so much in a short time and it was all done at our pace; a perfect blend of theory and practice. Tim is a pleasure to spend time with; extremely knowledgeable, patient, calm and fun. We were incredibly lucky with the weather but the coastline is so beautiful in the area that you would enjoy it any time of year. We cannot recommend the course more highly; it is exceptional value for money and gives you practical hands on experience that feels priceless. It has ignited our passion for powerboats and we look forward to completing more courses with Tim and the team.

Thanks to Kerry and Emma for this feedback. Makes it all worth while and we look forwards to seeing you back on the water soon when your friend buys a boat!!

For all those people thinking about learning to drive a boat or just getting a weekend on the water. Surely it’s worth giving it a go.

Our team sits at the heart of everything we do.

Since establishing Weymouth Powerboat Training, we have worked alongside a select group of instructors, each of whom brings extensive experience as someone who use powerboats in their day to day lives. Collectively, we spend a significant amount of time on the water professionally, voluntarily, and, of course, while delivering courses.

Several members of our team volunteer for the local RNLI and have roles such as Deputy Coxswains for the Weymouth Severn-class lifeboat and Helms for the Atlantic 85, while one also serves full-time as an RNLI trainer on the coast.

In addition, our team includes an RYA Powerboat Trainer who previously ran their own training centre, as well as a qualified paramedic who, alongside teaching powerboating, delivers our RYA First Aid courses.

This breadth of expertise enables us to deliver high-quality training across a range of vessels, led by instructors who have devoted much of their working lives to the water.

Over the next month, we will be introducing you to each member of the team and looking at their areas of expertise, their on water regular jobs and their background experience which makes them such good instructors.

Some of our feedback

"made me confident of the water and could not have enjoyed the course more, very informative, brilliant"

"Excellent Trainer, thoroughly enjoyed the course, thankyou"

"loved every minute! The tuition and course content were spot on. Pace was considered, our instructor was one of those rare experts who is also approachable and down to earth"

RYA Powerboat Level 2 - No experience needed, just the desire to get on the water and give it a go. A great 2 day course covering safety on the water, boat handling at slow and higher speeds, mooring, anchoring, rules and regs. A 16 hour course with most of it spent practically on the water.
Spaces left on courses throughout the year. This qualification also allows you to apply for your International Certificate of Competence allowing you to hire boats in many different countries

On all our courses, safety is paramount.

Understanding how your craft handles in different conditions is essential for your safety and the safety of your crew.

As an instructor or commercially endorsed skipper, you are responsible for the “safe speed” and crew / passenger safety on your boat.

Have a read through this report which highlights not only how it can go wrong but also discusses safety briefings, boat layout and how to respond.

All our powerboat courses go through these safety points and discuss what safe speed is and how we decide on that speed.

For professional training with experienced instructors in our boat or your own, get in touch and discuss your options.

Following a MAIB report into a serious marine casualty, we’re sharing key safety messages for instructors.

When a marine accident happens, there are lessons to be learned that may help prevent a recurrence.

One such incident occurred in June 2023 and, as part of the recommendations in the report published by the MAIB in late 2025, the RYA was asked to share the safety messages with its network. The start of the UK summer season felt like an appropriate time to highlight these messages to instructors.

Ever wondered how a powerboat Level 2 course runs? Well we had perfect weather this weekend with both days spent predominantly on the water.

Saturday am, intro to the boat, the area, kit and all safety equipment. Onto the water for slow speed boat handling, coming alongside practice and general boat confidence
Saturday PM, Turning in a confined space, MOB, intro to planing speed.
Sunday AM, passage planning for a trip to Portland Marina, execute passage plan, boat handling in Portland Marina,
Sunday PM, Anchoring, MOB drills and watching dolphins!!

Powerboat level 2 is an on water course with most of the theory able to be taught on the boat during the course. Its fantastic for getting time on the water, driving the boat and gaining experience. The RYA Level 2 syllabus is set but we pride ourselves in having great kit and fantastic instructors to deliver the courses.

Dale, Colin and Mark sent us these photos and a great review to go with it.

"Just finished my powerboat level 2 course. Very experienced and friendly instructors. Had a great two days and highly recommend it"
