'Is a motorbike cheaper than the Tube?' is a question with no honest one-word answer, so we did the sums instead.

A week of Tube travel is capped between £44.70 and £81.60 depending on your zones. Petrol was 161.63p a litre in the week commencing 24 August. Vehicle tax on a motorcycle runs from £27 to £125 a year, against £200 for a standard car registered on or after 1 April 2017.

We have been straight about what we cannot tell you too, including insurance and parking, and we promise nobody a saving.

Good riders don’t just use the brakes to stop - they use them to control speed.

Reduce your speed before bends, roundabouts and junctions. Brake smoothly while the motorcycle is upright, release the brakes progressively and then accelerate gently as you exit the hazard. Planning ahead makes every ride safer, smoother and more controlled, reflecting the riding principles taught in DVSA guidance and advanced riding.

Safe braking means using both brakes together.

The front brake provides most of your stopping power, while the rear brake helps keep the motorcycle balanced and stable. Learning to apply both smoothly and progressively gives you shorter stopping distances and greater control in all road conditions.

Practise good braking habits before you need them in an emergency.

More riders are starting small. MCIA's July 2026 figures show UK registrations up 17.5% on last July, with the learner-friendly 51-125cc band growing even faster at 21% for the month, and the two best sellers were both 125s (Source: MCIA).

Our monthly commentary explains what that means if you are thinking about learning to ride in London.

Leather remains one of the best materials for abrasion resistance, but it isn’t the only safe option.

Modern textile motorcycle clothing with CE-approved armour offers excellent protection, is waterproof, lighter to wear and often more practical for everyday commuting.

Whatever you wear, make sure it’s designed specifically for motorcycling and includes impact protection in key areas such as the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Good protective equipment is an investment in your safety.

One of the most common questions riders ask is whether a metal Double D ring or a plastic quick-release buckle is safer.

Double D rings are widely used in professional racing because they’re extremely secure when correctly fastened. Quality quick-release buckles can also be very safe when they meet recognised safety standards and are used correctly.

The most important factors are choosing a certified helmet, ensuring the strap is adjusted properly and fastening it every single ride.
