What is E10 fuel and how will it affect you?

Plans for E10 fuel to become the standard grade at forecourts across the country are well underway. But what exactly is E10 fuel and what do you need to know about its launch in the UK?
Current petrol grades in the UK contain up to 5% bioethanol, known as E5. The proposed E10 fuel increases the share of the renewable energy produced using crops, to 10%.

It’s estimated that the greener fuel could reduce CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes per year, the equivalent of taking up to 350,000 cars off the road.

Estimates fail to mention, however, that there could be as many as 600,000 vehicles on our roads that aren’t compatible with the fuel.

Here is a look at the pros and cons of using this new fuel as a genuine answer to increasing emission issues.

What is E10 fuel?

E10 is a biofuel made up of 90% regular unleaded and 10% ethanol – hence the E10 name.

Standard unleaded fuel contains up to 5% ethanol and can be used in any petrol-engined car without problems or the need for modification.

With E10, things aren’t quite so simple, which is why its roll-out in the UK compared to other European countries has been delayed.

There are products available to help with the associated problems, your local TerraClean dealer has access to those.

Check out this link to the .gov guidance explanation about E10.

03/11/2020

Drilling holes in substrates of the Diesel Particulate Filter to make exhaust gases flow more freely through the structure defeats the purpose of the component which is to remove soot from the exhaust.
Whilst this affects the reliability it also invalidates warranty on the engine and it’s after treatment systems as unauthorised modifications are forbidden.
There are frequently short and long term consequences although it may be unintended.
It disrupts the careful balance between performance and emissions reduction & there is known incidents of Diesel Particulate Filters cracking or even melting due to changes upstream.
The melting point of ceramic material is 1’400 degrees C (around 2’500 F) and as a point of reference the exhaust normally leaves the exhaust at around 600 degrees C (around 1’100 F) during regeneration, there is a considerable and dangerous difference between the acceptable parameters.
The best and least costly option when a problem develops is to arrange for the vehicle to be assessed in the workshop as soon as the fault occurs.
We now offer a full DPF service including on car and off car cleaning once the initial assessment has been performed and the route cause of the DPF issue is identified and rectified.
