If you've never actually been told what an MOT checks → you're not alone. Most garages hand you a pass or fail sheet and leave it at that. 📋

Here's the actual breakdown of what gets tested:

🔍 Identity check → registration, VIN, colour, mileage. Making sure your car matches the system.

💡 Lights and signals → every single one. This is the number one MOT fail across the UK and it's almost always a £3 bulb nobody noticed had blown.

🛞 Tyres → tread depth (legal minimum 1.6mm but we'd recommend more), condition, pressure, sidewall damage.

🛑 Brakes → not just "do they work" but "do they work evenly?" Brake balance matters. Pads, discs, pipes, handbrake.

👁️ Visibility → windscreen damage, wipers, washers, mirrors. Anything that affects the driver's ability to see clearly.

🔧 Steering and suspension → wear, play, damage. The tester checks how the car handles, not just how it looks.

💨 Emissions → exhaust system, catalytic converter, emissions readings.

🚗 Structure → corrosion, damage, anything that affects the vehicle's structural integrity.

This review came in recently and it's stayed with us. ✨

Because it's not about the car. It's about how she felt walking in → and how she felt walking out. And that right there? That's the whole job. That’s the work. That’s the support.

Let’s fix something that shouldn’t need fixing. 🛠️

There’s a running joke in the motor trade that women get told less about their cars than men do. It’s not really a joke → it’s a pattern we see every single week at the garage. Women walking in with zero information about their own car, because nobody ever bothered to explain it.

That ends here. Six things every single driver should know → regardless of who you are, who taught you to drive, or whether you’ve ever felt confident asking:

🚗 Tyre pressure → it’s printed on a sticker inside your driver’s door frame. Not a mystery. Check it monthly. Correct pressure saves fuel, extends tyre life, and keeps you safer.
🔧 You can ask to see the part → any replaced component. Any garage. Any time. A good garage keeps the old part for exactly this reason.
🚨 Dashboard lights aren’t all equal → red means stop driving, amber means book in soon, green/blue are informational. Learning the colour code alone changes how you drive.
📖 Service history affects resale → a properly stamped service book can add £500–£1500 to your car’s value when you sell it. It’s not just paperwork → it’s cash.
🛢️ Your oil level is YOUR job → not something to check once a year. Open the bonnet, pull the dipstick, wipe it, dip it, check it. 60 seconds. Monthly.
